Things to do in Nassau Bahamas.

Nassau, Bahamas is a very popular cruise port. It is often on the itinerary of shorter-length cruises. Nassau is popular because it is a Caribbean destination that is not too far from the US. It has beautiful beaches, great food and lots of different things to do. So, what are some good things to do if you have a port day in Nassau, Bahamas? Read on and find out!

Many people head to Paradise Island for the beaches (Cabbage Beach has been named one of the best in the world) and to the waterpark, pools, aquarium and so much more at the Atlantis Resort. This is a great option if you want a full day excursion of sand, surf, thrills and fun. But, this article is going to point out a few other things in this port town that might be fun to do instead.

Walk Queen’s Staircase and Fort Fincastle

Walking up the Queen's Staircase to Fort Faircastle is a great thing to do in Nassau, Bahamas.

These 66 steps (carved from limestone by slaves in the 1790s) lead from downtown to Fort Fincastle. The stairs were the main route between the two areas. The stairs have been over grown with lush vegitation so this is a beautiful place for pictures and nice to get out of the sun.

Fort Fincastle was also built in the 1790s on top Bennett’s Hill, the hights point on the island. Much of the fort and its 126 foot high walls are intact and can be easily explored without pre-booking a tour.

Eat Your Way through Arawak Cay

On a waterfront street about 10 minutes from the cruise pier you will find a bunch of places to eat. These restaurants are famous for their “fish fry”. Fish fry is their main and absolutely delicious food served along with conch salads and fritters. The fish served is freshly caught as well as other seafood options that are on the menu. You know that here is where you will find great food at good prices because this is where the locals eat too.

Visit Fort Charlotte

Fort Charlotte was built in the 1780s during the British colonial era. It is the largest in the Bahamas with 100 acres. This fort has a moat, underground passages, tunnels, dungeons, and cannons ready to be explored. Guided tours are available to really delve into the history of the fort. You will even find staff in period costumes demonstrating life at the time. Don’t miss the cannon-firing ceremony at Noon each day.

Pirates of Nassau Museum

Discover the pirate life at this interesting museum in downtown Nassau. Inside you will enter a model of the famous pirate ship “Revenge” and get to experience the life of a pirate. Wander through this interactive pirate experience and see a shantytown, the lower decks, cannons, and models of pirates doing their daily stuff. You will also get to learn about dreaded pirates of the seas, both men and women.

Ardastra Gardens and Wildlife Conservation Center

The Ardastra Gardens and Wildlife Conservation Center was the Bahamas’ first zoo. Though still small, it is the home of more than 200 animals including monkeys, Caribbean flamingos (the national bird), snakes, lorikeets, and other tropical animals. Visitors can get up close and personal with many of the animals, even feeding some. In addition to the animals and birds, you will also enjoy the lush tropical gardens throughout.

Taking a drive down the lush Maui, Hawaii coastline is great for getting away from the crowds.

Many travelers want to find places to vacation where they can get away. They search to discover locations to be by themselves enjoying the fresh air, the nature around them, and fewer other people. Maui, Hawaii is just the vacation location for getting away from the rigors of everyday life, and crowds and into relaxation, and adventure.

Are you looking for a vacation that gives you and your family a chance to reconnect with out being surrounded by other people? Maui, Hawaii might be just the place for you to get away from the crowds! Take a look at the following places to get out and explore!

See this pagefor current travel requirements to Hawaii.

Ioa Valley State Park

Ioa Valley State Park is located in central Maui, west of Wailuku. One highlight of this park is the iconic Ioa Needle, a 1200-foot green-mantled rock outcropping. It overlooks Ioa Stream and is a great place to hike.

From the parking lot, there is a paved path to view the Ioa Needle and beautiful views of the valley. There is also a rainforest walk and interactive exhibits at the Hawaii Nature Center for families to enjoy. Since the needle often clouds up during the day it is best to get there early for good viewing. Check out this page for hiking safety information in Maui.

The Ioa Valley also has historical significance as the location that Kamehameah defeated Maui’s forces, changing Hawaiian history, in a fierce battle in 1790. This state park is a great place to explore this bit of Hawaiian culture.

Horseback Riding in the Upcountry

Upcountry Maui is Hawaiian cowboy country. Since the late 1800s, Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo, have been wrangling cattle in the open fields on horseback. Now, ranches are giving families the opportunity to take a horseback-riding excursion and explore the mid-slopes of Haleakala. Many offer private horseback excursions for just your family or group.

If you happen to be in Maui on the 4th of July you might want to check out the Makawao Rodeo, Hawaii’s largest paniolo competition. There will be a parade and traditional rodeo events such as barrel racing, calf roping, and bronco riding with, of course, Hawaiian character tossed in. Note: The rodeo is probably not the best place to feel secluded but, for those willing to be in a crowd, it is sure to be festive and fun.

While in the Upcountry, you might want to stop in Makawao. This charming town is known for its cream puffs at the T. Komoda Store and the art scene. In fact, Makawao was once considered one of the top 25 arts destinations in the United States. You will be amazed by glassblowers, wood sculptors, and painters as you wander through the unique shops, boutiques, and art galleries.

The Road to Hana

While the road to Hana might be filled with cars there are plenty of places to get out and explore where you will feel like you have it all to yourself. This is a fantastic adventure in Maui, Hawaii to get away from the crowds! All along the road, there are pullouts that have trails you can explore. Some are more traveled than others. A few will have larger parking lots.

A few good stops are:

  • Waikamoi Ridge Trail–mile 9.5
  • The Garden of Eden Arboretum–mile 10 ($)
  • Kaumahina State Wayside Park–mile 12
  • Honomanu Bay Lookout–mile 14
  • Keanae–mile 17
  • Waiʻānapanapa State Park–mile 32.

Driving the road to Hana is an ALL Day trip. It takes about 3 hours to get to Hana if you don’t stop. so you will want to leave very early in the morning if you want to do this as a day trip. Also, don’t try and see everything in one trip. Pick a couple of stops and save the rest for another trip. (What a great reason to vacation in Maui again!). Staying overnight in Hana is highly recommended. This little town is so peaceful and rejuvenating and there is so much to see in this area that an overnight stay is a lovely addition to your vacation.

Haleakala National Park

When most people think of Haleakala National Park they think of the crater 10,000 ft above sea level. While the actual crater is fascinating you won’t feel like you have the whole place to yourself, ever. But, there are many trails around the crater and off the road up to the crater that are much less traveled. Safety note: Haleakala is at very high elevation. The temperature is much lower than the coast (easily 20-30 degrees cooler) and there is less oxygen. It is very easy to suffer from high-altitude sickness if you exert yourself too much.

There is another side to Haleakala National Park that is much less traveled. The Kipahulu section which is just past the town of Hana. This side has very different landscape than what you will find up to and at the crater. This area is lush and green with bamboo forests, waterfalls, and bubbling streams. The Pipiwai Trail to the 400 ft Waimoku Falls is a great hike into this area.

Haleakala National Park cannot be mentioned without talking about the spectacular sunrises and sunsets. They are glorious from the top, near the crater parking lot. Watching the sun come up or go down is not people-free but you will be so glad you went. Some consider the sunrise to be the most spectacular on earth. Important: You must make a reservation online up to 7 days prior to park and see the sunrise.

Nakalele Point and Blowhole

If you continue to drive northwest past Ka’anapali and Kapalua to about mile marker 38.5 you will find the turnout for the Nakalele Blowhole and heart rocks. Head down the hill about 200 feet to the rocks jutting out into the ocean and you will come to the blowhole. You can’t miss it. You can actually see it from the top but it is much more impressive from below. The geyser of water shooting up in the air (sometimes 100 ft) is caused by the ocean flowing under and forcing water through a large hole in the rocks.

Wear good shoes for this activity. The trail on the way down is coated with dirt and loose rocks and the rocks on the bottom are slippery. Also, be careful getting too close to the edge of the rocks. You might find yourself at best, quite wet, and at worst, a painful tossing onto the rocks.

Down on the rocks a little bit away from the blowhole there is a spot in the rocks where the whole makes an almost perfect heart shape. It is a fun find and photo op.

You will have company on this adventure but because it’s a bit of a drive there are not usually huge crowds.

Hawaii is a great vacation destination for 2021 and beyond to enjoy beautiful beaches.
Kihei, Maui

As we are stuck home longer and longer the desire to travel gets stronger and stronger. What can alleviate this inner struggle? Having a vacation to look forward to! That future vacation doesn’t have to be next month or 6 months from now to get you out of your funk. That is just too soon for some of you. Even a trip planned a year or 18 months from now can give you the energy you need to keep on going. But, where is a good place to go? Hawaii is a great vacation destination if you are wanting to travel in 2021 or in the future.

What makes Hawaii a great vacation destination?

All of the reasons to follow show why Hawaii is a fantastic vacation option anytime. I will also be including information to help you decide if it might be a place you want to go in 2021.

#1 Ease of travel

First thing, Hawaii is a US destination so no passport is needed. Woohoo! Such a simple way to travel to the tropics! There are many flights from all over the US to Hawaii. Plus, there are even flights directly to the smaller islands, no need to always stop in Honolulu.

As for our current situation (that will probably continue for much of 2021), it is one of the easier destinations to visit. Notice I said easier not easy. There are still some hoops you will have to jump through before you can head to the beach but Hawaii is definitely easier than traveling international.

To visit Hawaii (Kauai is the more restrictive and so the following info doesn’t apply to visiting Kauai) you will need to:

  1. get a negative Covid test 72 hours before arrival from an approved testing location
  2. fill out the Safe Travels Form 24 hour before arrival
  3. upload negative Covid test before arrival.

All steps must be completed accurately or you will be required to quarantine for 10 days.

#2 Room to spread out

Bamboo Forest on Maui

Even though they are islands there is still plenty of room to spread out on each one. There are many wonderful trails to hike, numerous different options to fish, snorkel, dive, and leisure cruise, vast beaches to soak up the sun, and beautiful roads to drive along the coast and through the forests.

All of the different activities available make it easy to distance your family from others. Another excellent reason why Hawaii could be a great vacation destination for your family in 2021 or after.

#3 Magnificent Beaches

Ko’Olina, Oahu Beach at sunset

The beaches in Hawaii are stunning with their soft sand, beautiful blue waters, and lush surroundings. You will find busier beaches closer to the populated areas and the hotel zones. And, if you are willing to drive a bit there are some gorgeous more secluded options that have less amenities but an even more tropical feel.

Heading to and from the beach you will need to be wearing a mask. Once situated, if you are an adequate distance from other families you will be able to remove your mask. The key thing to remember while at the beach is to remain a good distance from others while in the sand and in the water.

#4 Vast array of resort options

There are many resort options dotting the islands from ultra-luxurious to more moderate. You have a range of choices depending on what suits your family’s needs. Do you want to be right on the beach or are you willing to travel? Must have a sprawling pool area? Are onsite restaurants a necessity? Would you prefer to be secluded or right in the midst of the action?

During this time most resorts will require masks while on the property, especially inside. Pool areas may or may not require masks once sitting. This is something to consider right now picking out a resort.

#5 The Culture of Hawaii

The warm, welcoming, peaceful feeling is one of the biggest draws to the Hawaiian islands. During your visit you will encounter an attitude of caring, for one another and the environment. There are many different places you can go to learn more about the heritage, history, and culture of the Hawaiian people on every island. The Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu, Haleakala State Park on Maui, and Hulihee Palace on the Big Island are just a few possibilities.

Attending one of the many Luaus is a fun way to enjoy the food, music, dancing, and stories of the islands. Right now, you will definitely want to get reservations ahead of time since they are less frequent and have lower capacity.

During the last year the people of Hawaii have seen a great restoration of their islands. There is some hesitation for throngs of visitors to decend. As you visit, please be mindful of taking care of and respecting the beautiful land you are enjoying.

#6 Weather

Hawaii has wonderful weather almost year-round without a whole lot of fluctuation in temperature. There are two seasons on the islands, summer (May-October) and winter (November-April). Summer temperatures average in the mid 80s and winter temperatures average in the mid 70s. January and February are the coldest months. Summer waves are generally gentler than winter waves. But the wave strength can vary at different parts of the island.

Each island has a rainier side and a drier side. Keep that in mind when choosing where to stay. Rain is often localized to one part of the island so it is very easy to go to another part for some sunshine.

Due to being volcanic islands, there are mountainous areas. Higher elevations are definitely cooler than by the ocean. For example, If you plan to go up to Haleakala in Maui it can be quite cold (up to 30 degrees colder) and a coat will be very appreciated.

Great weather, beautiful landscape, tropical ocean breezes, and luscious sand, are just a few reasons why Hawaii could be the perfect vacation for your family in 2021 or sometime in the future.

There is more to do on your vacation to Cancun, Mexico than just go to the beach. They are gorgeous, though.

The top five reasons to vacation in Cancún, Mexico (besides the obvious one!)

Okay, you don’t really need five reasons to go to Cancún. One should suffice–the beach in this city! Miles and miles of white sandy beaches. But, if you need some more, here are five more reasons that you should have you packing your bags and setting out on a vacation to Cancun, Mexico in the glorious Mexican Caribbean!

Gorgeous All-Inclusive Resorts

Check out – or, better yet, check into – the Moon Palace: one of the region’s top ten beach resorts, and all-inclusive to boot. Swimming pools? How about ten. Places to eat? The resort has a good twenty. Golf? Check. Spas? There are several. When you come to Cancún, you’re going to be at a premiere spot right on the Caribbean ocean. So let yourself get pampered a little!

Ancient history right nearby

If you’re at all into ancient history, one of the best sites is Tulum, an easy day trip from the tip of the peninsula. –One of the benefits of Tulum is being far less crowded than the more well-known Chichen Itza. You can wander these wonderful ruins alone or with a guide. (But if you really want to learn anything about the ancients who built it, you’ll want a guide!) You also don’t want to miss the iguanas posing on the stones so that you can take a selfie. Overall, it’s a terrific diversion from all the sun-soaking on the beach.

Relaxing on Isla Mujeres

Right across the Bahia de Mujeres, off the coast from Cancún, the Isla Mujeres isn’t only for women. (And that’s despite the name meaning “women’s island” in Spanish!) Here you can enjoy a change in view of the Cancun skyline while enjoying a calmer Caribbean vibe. Spend a relaxing afternoon at the beach, between two of the best meals you’ll eat in Cancún. This island is renowned for its food, and you’ll find everything – from superb Italian and French flavors to wonderful, local Mayan and Yucatecan cuisine.

Exploring jungle ruins

While the Tulum ruins are right on the beach, the ruins of Cobá are tucked away in the jungle. They are well worth the extra effort to get to. At Cobá, may climb one of the ancient Mayan pyramids, and be rewarded at the top with spectacular views of the Yucatán jungle. You’ll be enveloped by the feeling of authenticity: these ruins today are as surrounded by the ever-encroaching forest as they must have been ages ago. Cobá is a must-see day excursion – the drive from Cancún is less than two hours!

World-class nightlife

Tired of beaches and ruins? Then it’s time to hit the clubs! The best club in Cancún, by far, is Coco Bongo – a huge dance club with a thousand incredible acts, any one of which will make you forget that you’re not in Las Vegas! Tickets come with unlimited drinks, and the club stays open late. Dance the night away – and then sleep all day on the beach. You’re in Cancún! You can do whatever you want!

Mexico might be just south of the border but a terrific place to vacation. Flights are quick from much of the United States. Perfect for a quick weekend getaway or a longer trip.

Have you vacationed in Cancun, Mexico? What was your favorite thing to do? Let me know in the comments below!

If you are headed to Jamaica on a cruise ship there is a good chance you will be docking at Falmouth. The port at Falmouth was updated in 2011 into a fantastic place to eat, shop, and play. For some visitors, the port area is as far as they go. They find enough shopping (common international port shops and a few craft booths), restaurants such as Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, shaded areas to relax, and a pool area. But, for the adventuresome, there are some great things to discover once you step outside the gates. So, read on and find out a few terrific things to do while you spend a port day in Falmouth, Jamaica!

By the way, these activities are also great for those planning a resort vacation near Falmouth.

Rafting Martha Brae River

Rafting down the Martha Brae River is an hour long rafting trip that is fun for the entire family. You ride down the river on a 10-foot long bamboo raft, which is stable enough for those who don’t swim. The 3-mile journey will take you through a scenic mangrove forest. The river is quiet and peaceful creating a experience your family will remember for a long time.

If you are short on time, this is a great excursion. It is fairly close to the port. You will even be able to visit Miss Martha’s Herb Garden and still return to the ship on time.

Swamp Safari

Do you love crocodiles? How about a snake or two? At Charles Swaby’s Swamp Safari or Crocodile Farm that is just what you will find. So, if holding a baby crocodile or boa constrictor has been on your bucket list then this is the place for you. If you aren’t particularly a fan of reptiles, I will say it is pretty cool to watch them be fed. Oh, James Bond lovers, you will also be really interested. After the tour you get to see a reenactment of a scene from “Live and Let Die,” the one originally shot there.

This excursion is only 5 minutes west of the pier. It’s a nice close activity for those who just don’t want to adventure out too far. This is a great way to spend a port day in Falmouth, Jamaica.

Jamaica Culinary Tours

The Jamaica Culinary Tours serves the best of two worlds: food and history. On the tour you expert guides will lead you through the streets of Falmouth. As you walk you will hear about plantation life, local cuisine, Jamaican cooking methods, and a bit of history thrown in there too. You will also stop along the way with a couple of street vendors for a sample and then in a restaurant for a couple more.

The samples are usually enough to make up lunch. They are able to make accommodations for vegetarians but not for other dietary needs such as vegan, gluten, or dairy-free.

River Tubing the Rio Bueno

The Rio Bueno River is over near Montego Bay so you get to start off your adventure with a ride over there. You will get to hike through the forest before reaching the river. Once at the river, you will get into your tube. Let the fun begin!

Currents propel you down the river past many scenic sights in the surrounding jungle–Old Colonial Bridge, the Bengal Beach, and others. If you really want to up the action you can opt for white-water rafting. Bengal Beach is the ending spot where you can then relax on the beach, swim, or get something to eat. This river tubing adventure is another fun way to spend a port day in Falmouth, Jamaica.

Burwood Beach

Would you just like to relax on the beach in Jamaica? Burwood Beach is only 10 minutes from the port. This beach is one of the only public beaches available. But you will not be disappointed! The beautiful white sands and ocean waves are the perfect place to relax or swim. There is bathrooms, showers and a changing area available. There is even a lifeguard on duty. But, there isn’t a whole lot of shade and the beach can get pretty hot. Don’t forget the sunblock! The cost is only $5 per person which makes this a really affordable excursion.

Costa Maya, Mexico is a great place to experience the Mayan culture. The port of Costa Maya is fairly small and the fishing village of Mahahual is just a short ride (2 miles) away. As you get off your ship you will find yourself in a delightful shopping/dining/entertainment area. Right here there are 3 swimming pools and just a quick walk to a beach. You could easily spend all your time in the port area of Costa Maya but there is quite a bit more out there with just a little bit of planning and a sense of adventure.

Costa Maya is a great place to experience Mayan culture watching the hanging acrobats spin around the very tall post.
Hanging acrobat show you can watch right after exiting your cruise ship

The people of this town are more than ready to show you a little bit about their culture. Let’s explore some wonderful activities to experience the culture of Costa Maya, Mexico.

Visit Mahahual

This fishing village is only 2 miles from the cruise ship port. Many visitors feel this is where you see the real culture of this area. Only about 1000 people live in Mahahual and their living is dependant on tourism. You will find beautiful beaches and beach clubs, restaurants, bars, shopping and people ready to help you learn about their culture.

Cooking Classes

One excursion that many guests love is the cooking classes taught by local residents. Guests are taught traditional cooking techniques of the Yucatecan Mexican people. Guests might learn to cook foods like tortillas, empanadas, flautas, pico de gallo, tamales, coconut helado, jicama salad and even more. This is definitely an excursion that you can take home with you and bring back fond memories when you cook the foods at home. Ask your travel advisor for help finding a great cooking class.

Visit the Mayan Ruins

One of the most popular cultural activities is to visit Myan ruins. You will find ruins from as early as 200 BC.

Chacchoben Ruins

Visiting Chacchoben is a great way to experience Mayan culture in Costa Maya, Mexico.

Chacchoben is the closest ruin site to Costa Maya. It is about 50 minutes away. You can schedule an excursion ahead of time or hire a taxi or shttle when you get to the port. Renting a car is also a possibility. The roads are clearly marked.

Chacchoben includes two main temple pyramids dated 200 B.C. to A.D. 700. These ruins are relatively newly discovered as they weren’t found until 1941. The site was opened to the public in 2002 after 8 years of restoration. You can either take a guided tour or explore the area on your own. There isn’t much signage so you will learn a lot more about the history and Mayan culture if you have a guide. The surrounding jungle gives this area a very ancient feel. And, because the nearby jungle is lush you might spot a spider monkey. Note: you are not allowed to climb up the ruins.

Dzibanche and Kohunlich Ruins

These two ruin sites are less traveled as they are a bit farther away. A guided tour will really bring the Mayan history and their culture to life for you. Vegetation enveloped this area at one point so the archeological history is also very interesting. Both sites can be visited in one day.

Dzibanche was a large city between 300 and 900 A.D. There were plazas, palaces, temples, homes, and public buildings that you see remnants of today. The most impressive pyramid is the Cormoranes Pyramid from the 5th Century A.D. You are allowed to climb these ruins to get a bird’s eye view of the surrounding jungle and archeological site. Be careful and watch your footing!

Kohunlich is the largest and most spectacular site. It isn’t as busy as it is about an hour and a half away. You can also climb to the top of the temples here for another beautiful view of the jungle. You are most likely to see those pesky spider monkeys here.

Today was all about the Mayan Culture that you can discover in when your cruise ship docks in the port of Costa Maya. But, this certainly isn’t all there is to do in Costa Maya. Oh no! Stay tuned for a future post about all the adventureous activities available in Costa Maya!

Have you visited Chacchoben? Is this ruin site or one of the others on your bucket list for your next cruise to Costa Maya?

Bratislava, Slovakia is an often overlooked tourist destination. Not surprising with both Vienna and Prague nearby. But, Bratislava deserves a look of its own. She may be smaller than the others but she has a flavor and style all her own and is worth the visit.

Because Bratislava is often passed over for the other larger capital cities this is a great city to visit if you want a quieter visit with fewer tourists. While Bratislava gets her share of tourists the streets and sights are much less busy here. Let’s take a look at a few things to see and do in this day guide to explore Bratislava, this pint-sized capital of Slovakia!

Things to See and Do in Bratislava

While Bratislava does get many travelers who stay for a few days many visitors are there just for the day. Bratislava is a river cruise port for many cruises down The Danube River. As part of your river cruise you have the option of taking an overview tour of the city. This tour will point out the major sites in Bratislava–Bratislava Castle, Michael’s Gate, St. Martin’s Cathedral, Old Town Hall, and a few other landmarks.

Bratislava Castle

But, what if you have already taken the tour basic city tour or want to just venture out on your own? The sights listed above are definitley must-see destinations for first timers to Bratislava. And, you might even want to go back to get a better look after the tour.

  • Climb the tower at Michael’s Gate for a beautiful view of the city
  • Tour inside St. Martin’s Cathedral longer
  • Climb the tower at Old Town Hall for a different view of the city
  • Visit the Bratislava City Museum for a taste of the city’s history
  • Get pictures with the statues around Old Town at the junction of Laurinská and Panská streets
  • Take more time reading the historical plaques and taking in the quirks and architecture of Old Town
  • Visit the University Library Building–a place of historic significance

Touring Bratislava on your own

If you are on a river cruise you will only have a day to tour Bratislava so you will have to make some choices of what to see. But here are some options for touring Bratislava, Slovakia–the pint sized capital that you probably won’t see on the included tours.

Devin Castle

Devin Castle is a great place to explore in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The first stop in this Day Guide to Exploring Bratislava, Slovakia is Devin Castle. The ruins of Devin Castle sit on a hill about 10 kilometers west of the center of Bratislava. The castle overlooks the Danube River so at some point you will sail by and have a view from the river. While Bratislava Castle was rebuilt after it was destroyed (in the early 1800s), Devin Castle was not but it is still an awesome plact to visit.

Perched on a 212m (650+ft) cliff, the castle overlooks the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. This strategic location provided control of the trade routes on the Danube as well as the anicent Amber Road. An exhibit in the upper castle and info boards throughout tell of Devin Castle’s story between the 13th and 20th centuries (with archeological traces going back to the 5th century BC).

Slavín War Memorial

This day guide to explore Bratislava Slovakia suggests visiting Slavin War Memorial.

Slavin Memorial was built in 1960 to remember the almost 7,000 Soviet troops killed in 1945 while liberating Bratislava from the Germans. The Memorial auditorium base sits atop the highest hill and is topped with a statue of a Soviet soldier lofted over ten stories. In front are six mass graves, the final resting place of the soldiers.

Residents and tourists alike make their way up the hill to remember the past and sweeping view of the Bratislava skyline.

Grassalkovich Palace

Grassalkovich Palace is the official residence of the Slovak President. You will find this Rococo palace from 1760 just north of Old Town. Since it is the permanent home of the president it isn’t open to the public. But the fountain in front and the formal gardens (now a public park) are worth the trek.

Primate’s Palace

This Neoclassical style palace constructed in the 1770s was also the president’s residence up until 1996. This palace is open to the public. The highlight is a tour of the Hall of Mirrors, five salons each named after the color of the decor. The Hall of Mirrors is significant because the Treaty of Pressburg was signed in December 1805 declaring Napoleon’s victory over the Third Coalition.

Most SNP and UFO Tower

MostSNP and the UFO tower are fun to explore on a day trip to Bratislava Slovakia.

This interesting structure is a relic from the Soviet occupation of Bratislava. The Most SNP (Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising) is the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge that only has one pylon and single set of cables. The highway/walking bridge over the Danube connects Old Town with the Petržalka borough and is a popular destination for visitors and locals.

The “UFO” structure at the top is what really catches people’s attention and is why it is in this day guide to explore Bratislava Slovakia. It sits 240′ above the river and has a 45-second elevator up to the observation deck, restaurant, and bar. If you eat at the restaurant you don’t have to pay a fee for the observation deck but the restaurant is kind of expensive. The views of the city from the UFO are spectacular. Note: the elevator is quite small and hot in the summer so if you are very claustrophobic you might want to pass.

Kapitulska Street

This street is only a few block from Old Town. It is definitely a trip back in time with its colorful midieval buildings. It’s just a short walk you might want to see if your tour doesn’t take this street.

Bratislava Transport Museum

The Bratislava Transportation Museum is located inside the first railway station on Šancová Street. In 1848, the first steam train pulled into the station, and the station is just as it was back then. There are also a few steam engines on display. And then there are the cars! They have Czech-made cars from the early 20th century (Pragas, Tatras, and Škodas). They also have a Soviet-era ZIL_115 limousine, common transportation in the 70s and 80s. Motorcycles from the 20s and 30s are on display as well This museum is a haven for car lovers and those who like history of all different sorts.

Hopefully you found this day guide to explore Bratislava, Slovakia helpful for planning your next trip!
