Getting your day off to a good start often sets the tone for your whole day. No one wants a bad day at Disney! Let’s explore 5 ways to make your morning great and get your day headed in a magical direction!
And now, 5 ways to start your Disney day in STYLE!
1) Mickey Waffles
Why not start your morning off right with a yummy, filling breakfast. Nothing will get your family focused on Mickey Mouse and Disney magic more than eating Mickey Waffles for breakfast. You will find these special waffles at all the table service restaurants that serve breakfast. Plus, value and moderate resorts will have these as options on their quick service breakfast menu. Guess what! You don’t even have to be staying at the resort to eat there. Feel free to stop on your way to the park.
2) Character Breakfast
This is taking Mickey Waffles to a whole ‘nother level! At a Character Breakfast not only will you get to feast on a delicious breakfast, including Mickey Waffles if you desire, but you also get to see your favorite Disney Characters. Character breakfasts are only at Table-Service restaurants and you must have advanced reservations.
Different Table-Service restaurants have different characters you will see. 1900 Park Fare (Grand Floridian) will have Princesses. Crystal Palace (Magic Kingdom) will have Winnie the Pooh and Friends. Lilo and Stitch will show up at O’hana’s (Polynesian). Chef Mickey’s will, of cours, have Mickey Mouse and Friends. There are quite a few other Character Breakfast possibilties. Talk with your Travel Advisor about which one might be the most fun for your family.
**Important Info: As of Summer 2020 the only Character Breakfasts available are at Topolino Terrace (Riviera Resort) and The Garden Grill Restaurant (Epcot). The Characters dance around the restaurant and wave and occasionally slow down for a far away selfie. Unfortunately, they will not sign autographs or pose with you. Other Character Dining will be opening up as time goes on. Talk with your Travel Advisor to keep updated.
3) Rope Drop
Rope Drop is such an awesome way start to your morning. It takes a little planning and sometimes work to get everyone out the door early but, TRUST ME, it will be so worth it!
Rope Drop is getting to the park before it even opens. The idea is to be through health screenings, security and the gate well before the park opens. You will want to make your way as far as possible into the park until you see the Cast Members with ropes holding you back from the rest of the park.
What’s the benefit of this? Crowds are lowest at this point of the day (FYI, sometimes new rides can upset this plan). If you are waiting halfway in the park, think how much closer you are to the rides. Using this method you can often ride most of your favorite rides within a couple hours and not have to wait in long lines.
When is this strategy really important? This strategy is most important during really crowded times–holidays and summer. Get your day started off right, ride your favorite rides and then you can relax the rest of the day enjoying the other wonderful activities in the park. Or you can take a break during the hottest and most crowded time of the day.
4) Minnie Van
How much better would your morning be if you didn’t have to fight the crowds to get on a bus, or have to walk a mile through the parking lot to get to the park entrance. Minnie Van to the rescue!
A Minnie Van (not actually just vans) can be scheduled to pick you up at any Resort and drop you off at any Park you choose. There is an additional fee but if just might be worth it to your family to get your day started off right!
Minnie Vans are scheduled through the Lyft app. Enter in Walt Disney World as a destination, select Minnie Van and continue from there. This is such a great way to start your Disney day in style!
5) VIP Private Tours
Now this is the absolute ultimate way to start off your Disney day in STYLE! This is a very expensive option but, OH MY GOODNESS! Would you have a blow-your-mind-awesome day!
First, there is the ultimate VIP Private Tour. You (and 6-9 of your favorite friends or family members) can have a Cast Member Guide you through all your favorite, must-do rides and attractions for the number of hours you wish. Often they will guide you up to the front of the line for those rides as they dazzle you with little known facts and knowledge about the parks. They are ready to answer every question and make just about every wish come true.
Then there are the VIP experiences that are already planned out. Still AMAZING but not tailored to your group and a little less expensive. You might spend a few hours riding all our favorite Disney Classics. Or spend a heart-pumping, thrill-seeking 7 hours riding major rides at the Magic Kingdom, Epcot AND Hollywood Studios. Can you imagine! Every big ride in 3 parks. Normally just the travel alone between 3 parks would take an hour and a half. What a day!!
No matter which VIP tour you choose you will definitely have a Supercalifragilistic kind of day you will always remember!
Important Info: As of Summer 2020 only the VIP Private Tours are taking Reservations. The other tour options will be available in the future.

Learn why you might want to add a Pre or Post cruise extension to your river cruise vacation!
Adding a pre/post river cruise extension has the possiblilty of making your amazing river cruise vacation out-of-this-world. By adding this through your cruise line your vacation becomes truly stress-free as even more of the details are taken care of for you. What a wonderful way to make your vacation even more luxurious!
Adding an extension is a fantastic way to add a little more time to your vacation and a chance to explore a little more without a longer cruise. Plus, you are not strictly on your own. You get to see what you want and go where you want but there is also someone very knowledgeable there to help you make a plan.
Just a side note: These exact benefits are true of AmaWaterways River Cruise land packages. Viking River Cruise packages are very similar but may have slightly different benefits. Other River Cruise lines may not have specific packages but will gladly help arrange hotel accommodations before or after your cruise. Talk with your Travel Advisor for details.
Definition
A pre/post-cruise land extension is a hotel stay coordinated by your river cruise line prior to or after your river cruise. Your extension might further explore the city where your cruise begins/ends or it might be in another city to explore. **An extension costs extra.
This blog will explore why and extension might be just right for you and your vacation. Read on for 5 reasons to add a pre or post-cruise extension to your river cruise!
1) More time to explore the city
Instead of hustling right from the airport to the cruise dock, you can go to a beautiful hotel instead. Then you will have a couple of days to explore the location and really get a chance to get to know the city. If your stay is post-cruise you can return to places you were introduced to on one of the included cruise tours. If your stay is pre-cruise then you also will have a day or two for your body to adjust to the time change before your cruise begins.
2) Special excursions
Each land extension will include a special excurison for you. Often these are tours of the city to help you get acquaited to the area and give you a springboard for further exploration later that day and the next.
3) A Cruise Manager accompanies you
Your English speaking cruise manager is with you every step of the way from the pre-cruise extension, through the cruise and on to the post-cruise extension. Throughout the whole vacation, you build a relationship and they are able to give you great suggestions and advice to make your vacation even more special.
During the pre/post extension they will have set times they are available to answer all your questions about the location you are in. Your cruise manager will save you so much time! They will be able to point you to the not-to-be-missed sites and the local favorites. He or she will have great suggestions about where to find delicious food or relax with a drink. They are an invaluable resource with all their knowledge of the area!
4) Beautiful acommodations and breakfast
Each hotel is specially chosen with many criteria in mind–reputation, service, cleanliness, and location. You will love being nearby to many of the major sites in the city. And, to start your day off right, you will be served a delicious breakfast each morning before you are off for your adventure.
5) Transfers
If you book a pre/post cruise extension, the transfers to/from the ship are all taken care of for you. It will be so nice not to have to worry about finding a cab or public transportation to your hotel. All those details are taken care of for you!
As a bonus, if you also book your airfare, all your transfers to and from the airport are scheduled for you. Imagine, landing in a foreign airport in a foreign country knowing that once you find the pick up location everything from that point onward is taken care of for you. All you have to do is enjoy the ride! This is truly a stress-free vacation!
Land Extension Possibilities
Land extension options depend on the cruise you book. Specific land extension destinations are scheduled with each itinerary. Some itineraries have the option of having both a pre and post-stay. Some will only have one option. Your travel advisor can help you find the itinerary that fits where you want to explore.

Picking a stateroom on a river cruise can be a bit confusing. What is a French Balcony? What is the difference between the letters in each category? Is a Veranda necessary? These questions are probably some of the ones rumbling around in your head. Keep reading and hopefully, the following information will help you understand the difference between the suites and staterooms on Viking River Cruise ships.
Explorer Suite
Explorer suites are one of the earliest rooms to book up because there are only two per boat. This room is the ultimate in space and luxury. This suite is located at the back of the upper deck of staterooms and has two full-size rooms. The wrap-around balcony provides amazing views of the countryside. The Explorer Suite features:
Suite size: 445 sq ft
River-view suite with private wraparound balcony offering 270-degree views off the spacious, separate sitting room & floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door, known as a French balcony, in the sleeping quarters
Two 40″ flat-screen Sony TVs
Large private bathroom with spacious glass-enclosed shower, heated bathroom floor & anti-fog mirror
Early check-in (available from 12 PM)
Complimentary Silver Spirits beverage package, Viking Air Plus services, laundry service, room service (during breakfast) & shoe shine service
Private airport transfers in Europe
Welcome champagne; mini-bar with wine, beer & soft drinks (replenished daily); daily fruit plate
Binoculars, coffee brewer & Marius-weave blanket
Veranda Suites
Each ship has 7 Veranda Suites. These suites are also located on the Upper Deck of staterooms. The full-size verandas are a wonderful place to sit out and watch the world sail by in your own quiet retreat. These suites also have two full-size rooms. Some of the features of the Veranda Suite are:
Suite size: 275 sq ft
River-view suite with full-size veranda off the spacious, separate sitting room & floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door, known as a French balcony, in the sleeping quarters
Hotel-style bed 79 in x 63 in (with optional twin-bed configuration); luxury linens & pillows
Two 40″ flat-screen Sony TVs
Large private bathroom with spacious glass-enclosed shower, heated bathroom floor & anti-fog mirror
Early check-in (available from 12 PM)
Complimentary Viking Air Plus, laundry & shoe shine services
Welcome champagne; mini-bar with wine, beer & soft drinks (replenished daily); daily fruit plate
Binoculars
Veranda Stateroom
The Veranda staterooms have the largest availability. Veranda staterooms are divided between the Upper Deck and the Middle Deck, both on the same side of the ship. Category A staterooms are on the Upper Deck and category B are on the Middle Deck. The lower deck staterooms are a little less expensive but have the same layout and amenities. Veranda suites are perfect for guests who prefer to sit on their own deck and not the common areas as much. Some Veranda stateroom features:
Stateroom size: 205 sq ft
River-view stateroom with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door opening to a full-size veranda
French Balcony Staterooms
The French Balcony staterooms are a lovely choice of stateroom. This stateroom has a wonderful floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door that you can open to bring in a nice breeze. You can sit and enjoy the view from the bed. What a wonderful way to wake up in the morning! These staterooms are a nice middle ground between the standard stateroom and a veranda.
There are a few French Balcony staterooms on the Upper deck toward the back of the boat. Most of the French Balconies are on the Middle deck. Category C are the staterooms on the Upper deck and category D are on the Middle deck and are a little less expensive. Rooms in both categories have the same layout and amenities. Some other French Balcony stateroom features are:
Stateroom size: 135 sq ft
River-view stateroom with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door to create a French balcony
Standard Stateroom
The Standard staterooms are located on the Main deck (the lowest level) and are at water level. These rooms have a nice big picture window (but it doesn’t open) to view outside. This is the most economical option and perfect for guests who plan to be out enjoying the ports and the ship during the day. The difference between the categories is the location. The layout and the amenities are the same for E and F. Category E is more midship and category F is a tad further back. Some features of a Standard stateroom are:
Stateroom size: 150 sq ft
River-view stateroom with half-height picture window
Amenities all staterooms and suites have in common
Hotel-style bed 79 in x 63 in (with optional twin-bed configuration); luxury linens & pillows
Free Wi-Fi (connection speed may vary)
40″ flat-screen Sony TV with infotainment system featuring Movies On Demand, plus CNBC, CNN, FOX, National Geographic & more
110/220 volt outlets & USB ports
Telephone, safe, refrigerator, hairdryer & individual climate control
Premium Freyja® toiletries; plush robes & slippers available upon request
Bottled water replenished daily
Stateroom steward & twice-daily housekeeping
Space under bed for storing suitcases
Roomy wardrobe with wooden hangers
These deck plans apply to Viking’s 50+ fleet of Longships. The decor will slightly differ from ship to ship but they are all quite similar. Also, as you can see each ship has a limited number of cabins–95 total. So, if there is a specific cabin you want to book then you will want to book early. Generally, French Balcony staterooms book up quickly. If you happen to be ready to book a stateroom on a river cruise please contact me. I would love to help!

Sometimes cruise ships can feel really crowded. Waiting in line at the buffet. Trying to get a lounge chair on the pool deck. Sometimes attempting to be in the pool without being splashed by excited kids. How can you possibly avoid crowds on a cruise ship?!!
IT IS possible to avoid crowds on a cruise! With a little knowledge in hand, you can have a relaxing cruise experience with a few less people.
Ways to avoid crowds on a cruise ship–
1) Eat breakfast and lunch in the Main Dining Room
The main dining room serves delicious food. But cruisers often don’t want to take the time for a sit down meal. So, if you want a quieter meal with out all the crowds of people then this is a great place to go. Some ships also provide a delicious buffet in the Main Dining Room along with the menu. (On Royal Caribbean, this is my favorite place to eat for lunch.)
2) Eat at the buffet right at opening or close to closing
If you really love to eat at the main buffet restaurant then your best bet is to eat right away when they open for each meal or close to when they are closing. This way you should miss most of the crowds.
3) Book a balcony stateroom
On a warm weather cruise the pool deck can get extremely busy with people wanting to be outside and soak up the sun. If you also love the open air but want to avoid crowds then you will love having your own balcony. A balcony gives you the opportunity to be outside and yet all by yourself to enjoy peace and quiet.
Just a side note–On Royal Caribbean Oasis Class ships they have balcony staterooms over Central Park. This is a great option if you would like a balcony for a little less cost than an oceanview balcony. You still have relative peace but there is a little more noise and you can see the other balconies across Central Park.
4) Book a suite
If you desire a little more luxury and also avoid crowds then a suite is a fantastic option. On many ships, guests staying in suites have access to an exclusive deck and pool area. Since this area is only available for suite guest there is a very limited number of people allowed in. Another perk is that suite guest usually have an exclusive dining room. This dining room is not only a great place to avoid the crowds, but also the dining experience has better service and cuisine.
5) Utilize the bars and lounge areas during the day
Some of the bars and lounges are not serving during the day. This is a great place to get away! While on the Disney Wonder, a lot of time was spent relaxing in the comfy chairs a the Crown and Fin Pub during the day.
6) Relax in the Adult-Only areas
The adult-only section of cruise ships will have quite a bit of seating/lounging, a pool, a bar and often a place to eat. Sometimes these areas can be pretty busy. But, they can also be a great place for some quiet. Because they are for adults only even if there is a lot of people it still tends to be quieter and with less people running around than the main pool area.
7) Enjoy a movie
Disney Cruise Line has a designated movie theater on their ships that plays movies all throughout the day. Popcorn and candy are available for purchase right outside the theater for a full movie experience. There are often not many people in the theater so it can be a great place to get away and decompress from the crowds.
Check the online guides for this option on other cruise lines.

If you are trying to decide which river cruise line for your next vacation it can be a difficult choice. There are many great choices–AmaWaterways, Tauck, Avalon, and Uniworld to name a few. Different lines cater to different guests. This blog has focused quite a bit on AmaWaterways. AmaWaterways is an amazing line for all kinds of guests but especially for families as they have accomodations for up to 4 and welcome younger travelers.
But, today we are going to focus on another terrific river cruise line, Viking River Cruises. Viking caters to a bit older clientele as all travelers must be over 18 years old. If you haven’t traveled on a Viking River Cruise before this is an excellent video! If you have traveled on Viking before then this video will be a great reminder.
The Thinking Person’s Cruise
One of Viking’s specialties is enriching your knowledge and immersing you in the culture of the countries you visit. Viking calls themselves, “The Thinking Person’s River Cruise.” This doesn’t mean that you are required to participate in these events but if you are interested in delving in and learning about the countries they will provide ample opportunity to help you learn and grow.
Before Your Trip
You education can begin as soon as you book your trip (or actually even before). As you search different itineraries you will see a day by day list of the different cities that cruise will visit.
On the right you will see Read More. Click on this and the next page is full of awesome information. From here you can research your shore excursion options AND some great articles and videos about that day’s destination.
Viking provides an extensive list of films that highlight your destination.
Recommended Reading
Viking makes learning as easy for you as possible. They have curated a list of books that feature your destination. There are books about the history, art, architecture, culture, biographies and autobiographies about influential people, fiction and classics. This is when planning ahead is very beneficial.
During Your Adventure
This is the really fun, much-anticipated part of your Viking, Thinking Person’s River Cruise! There are so many opportunites for you to grow your knowledge of the country you are about to visit.
Viking Curated Library
A London bookseller and Royal Warrant holder, Heywood Hill, put together an insightful collection of reading material specially chosen for the guests to read onboard the ship. Hand selected, these books from art to history to destination-focused materials will enhance your understanding of each port.
Guest Lectures and Port Talks
This feature is key to making Viking a Thinking Person’s River Cruise. Each day you can prepare for the upcoming port of call through a multimedia presentation with information about the history, culture, and must-see landmarks. Guests are also provided an opportunity to participate in a lecture program designed to educate you about the architecture, music, art, natural world, and other interesting features of your upcoming destination. These lectures enhance what you learned while onshore, especially if you go on one of the tours.
Destination Insights
From the comfort of your stateroom you can watch a special series of short films. You will find them very helpful to learn about your destination and some little-known places to visit. This series aids in deepening your understand and enjoyment of your time in port. And, you might find that it help you see things a little differently than before.
Musical Performances
Talented musicians are brought onboard for special performances. Listen to some classical selections as well as some from the region you are visiting. Enjoy the chance to experience the country with all your senses, spirit and soul.
In addition to onboard musical concerts, each Viking itinerary includes a Destination Performance. This performance will represent the most iconic cultural performing art of the region. You might find yourself at a Viennese opera, enjoying a Portuguese fado, or listening to the world-renowned Mariinsky Theater Singers. Truly magnificent events!
Craft and Cooking Demonstration
Diving into the culture isn’t limited to book knowledge and lectures. Viking also provides events for you to encounter the more artistic side of the culture with traditional crafts (glassblowing, lace making, or wooden shoemaking) and regional culinary delights (Austrian apple strudel, Bavarian pretzels, and more).
On Shore Experiences
The Viking Way® of discovering your destination gives you a closer look, even offering behind-the-scenes experiences. Tours will assuredly include the iconic and must-see landmarks and attractions. In addition, Viking strives to provide guests Local Life, Working World, and optional Privileged Access® excursions in locations that are difficult to visit.
As you can see, Viking River Cruises excells at helping to learn all that you can about the countries you will visit on your cruise. This knowledge will give you a better understanding and help you discover things about the people and places that you would not have been able to before.

Adventure Theater blends educational activities with on-your-feet fun. Adventure Theater participants get a first taste of the actor’s craft, in which entire worlds are created with just their bodies, voices and imaginations. Using structured theater games, vocal and physical exercises, and creativity-freeing activities, instructors guide groups through an exploration of the theater arts.
Sail Into Story Time sparks imaginations and entertains young vacationers with a story hour followed by creative, hands-on activities and projects.
Family Activities are a free, onboard programs that allow children and their parents to participate in planned activities within a structured environment to spend quality time together. Activities depend on the length of the cruise and can range from family discos, Karaoke, sporting eventsto talent shows and scavenger hunts.
Get the nitty gritty details about the program here.
Royal Babies and Tots Nursery
Parents can drop off children under 3 to be cared for by trained child care professionals. There is an additional fee for drop-off time reserved in the nursery. Special phones are given to parents so staff can contact them or just to check up. Free-time play is made available for you to play with your children in this area daily.
Teen Program
Teens (ages 12-17) have their own area aboard the Symphony to enjoy. They can come and go as they please until 1 AM. Activities are planned for teens to enjoy if they want. Just for teens, there are sports activities, movies, video games, places to hang, and dance. As long as a waiver is signed by parents, teens can use the Rock Climbing Wall, Flowrider, Zipline, and fitness center. All the slides are also highlights for teenagers. Teens also love to purchase the all-they-can-drink soda beverage package.

Boy, it sure seems like everything at Disney World has recently changed with all the new health and safety measures. BUT, I want to explore the things that are still the same at Disney World in 2020.
There are actually quite a few really important features that are still the same at Disney World as they were before.
I believe that because the foundations of the Disney experience haven’t changed you can still have a fantastic Disney World vacation even in the midst of the changes!
Let’t take a look!
Theming at Disney World
Immediately when you walk under the bridge into the Magic Kindom, through the turnstiles right onto Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood Studios, or Discovery Island at Animal Kingdom, you are transported to another world. A world of magic, enchantment, and where dreams come true. This is still true of Disney World.
You will see the same early 20th-century streetscape, the same old Hollywood flair, the same mysterious Tree of Life, the same iconic Epcot ball. All the lands that you know and love are still there. Africa and Asia haven’t disappeared. Adventureland didn’t get taken over by pirates or angry natives. Galaxy’s Edge wasn’t decimated by the First Order. They are all still there waiting for you!
The Rides
If one on the things you love about Disney World is the rides then you are definitely in luck! Most all of the rides are open and ready for you. Now the queue might be a little different. You might not get to experience the pre-ride activities such as the stretching room in the Haunted Mansion. You may not ride with guest other than your own family (this is a total BONUS!). BUT, the rides are still the same.
The dolls are still forever singing the tune you will be humming all day long after It’s a Small World. The Dwarves are off to work. You will still be terrified at the Tower of Terror. Elsa and Anna will still “let it go”. Battles will still ensue as you make your Smugglers Run.
AND, GUESS WHAT! The lines will be quite a bit smaller (at least for a little while). Okay, okay. I guess this is a change. But I think we can all agree, it is a very good one!
Beautiful Landscaping
One of my favorite things about visiting Disney World is the beauty and cleanliness all around. Gorgeous trees, plants and flowers make the atmosphere so exciting and yet calming. Sitting down on a bench in Adventureland (with Dole Whip in hand) and gazing at all the lush plants and trees is a highlight. I also can’t neglect to mention all the awesome Disney topiaries!
Awesome Customer Service
Disney is known for their fantastic customer service. They often seem to do whatever they can to make your trip to Disney World as wonderful as possible. Even though things look a little different and they might not always be able to do things they way they could before they are still working hard to make your vacation magical.
Incredible Cast Members
Yes, all the fantastic Cast Members are there at Disney World ready to greet you and make your vacation magical. They still love to talk with you, share their tips, and guide you during your day. They will be there at the rides directing you through the lines and where to sit, in the restaurants serving and preparing your food, in the shops helping you find all the souvenirs you could possibly want.
Cast Members have been specially trained to help you navigate all the changes and keep the Disney magic alive and well even in the midst of all the differences.
And of course, they are there hoping to be able to spread a little Pixie Dust too!
The Food
Right now, how you order at the restaurants or where you sit down might be a little different. You might find the menus slightly pared down from what they were before and not all are open. BUT, you can be assured that Disney is doing everything they can to keep the quality and taste of the food just what you always expect. Piping hot churros, popcorn and pretzels are sitting on the carts waiting for you. The quality and the delicious taste of the food is still the same at Disney World!
Disney Transportation
Thankfully Disney Transportation is here to stay even through all the changes. You are still able to land at Orlando International Airport and not have to drive at all for your whole Disney World Vacation due to the awesome Disney World Transportation.
Disney’s Magical Express will still pick you up at the airport (now you have to get your own luggage) and whisk you off to your fabulous Disney resort. Fewer people will be on the bus with you (maybe this means less waiting for the bus to fill up) and you will be spread throughout. This sounds quite nice!
Disney buses are ready to take you wherever you want to go on Disney World property that is currently open. Theses busses will also have you spread out throughout the bus and will have less passengers. Again, not such a bad thing!
Water transportation is also still available. You can travel on the Friendship boats from Epcot to the nearby resorts. The Magic Kingdom water transportation is also available to the Tickets and Transportation Center and Ft. Wilderness Resort and Campground.
Shopping!
Boy, oh boy! The stores are open for you to shop, shop, shop. Disney is well stocked for you to come in a swoop up all kinds of merchandise. There are cute new shirts welcoming everyone back to Disney World. The 2020 items are still there. At Epcot, you can still purchase memorabilia from the Flower and Garden Festival. You might even find some merchandise from the Taste of Epcot Food and Wine Festival that began on Epcot’s opening day.
The fabulous Cast Members are ready to help you find that sought after hat, stuffed Disney Character, or funny Grumpy t-shirt. They are hoping to make this part of your Disney day fantastic. Just as it should be!
So as you can see…
So what thing that hasn’t changed are you most excited about? Let me know in the comments below!
So you have decided you definitely want to sail with Disney Cruise Line. You are ready for the Broadway-caliber Disney shows, Disney characters, themed dining rooms, exciting deck parties, and so much more. But, you are now faced with a choice. A possibly easy but also very hard choice. Which Disney Cruise ship should I choose?!
Overview of the ships
The Disney Magic was the first Disney Cruise Line ship launched back in 1998. The Disney Wonder quickly followed in 1999. These two ships brought Disney Cruise Line to the forefront in the cruise line industry. Then in 2011 and 2012 the Disney Dream and Fantasy set sail joining the other two.
All four ships are reminiscent of classic ocean liners with their double smokestacks, sleek lines, nautical styling and interiors greatly influenced by the styles of the early 20th-century. Although, you will not mistake them for any other line with their distinctive Disney accouterments–Mickey head logo on the stacks, striking gold scroll and Mickey Mouse head detailing on the bow and stern of the ship along with 3D Disney Characters hanging from the stern. Then, throughout the interior of the ship Disney art is on the walls, crafted into the railings, woven into the carpets, and hidden for your enjoyment. Definitely Disney–so fun but so elegant and classic.
The Disney Magic and Wonder are very similar ships. They definitely have differences but the size, passenger capacity, and general arrangement of the ship are almost the same. These ships are smaller and hold less passengers but the staterooms are a smidgen larger. Both of these ships have been reimagined multiple times so they are as up-to-date as the other ships.
The Disney Dream and Fantasy have more amenities because they are larger ships and have more room. They are 151 feet longer, 35 feet taller, and 15 feet wider. Due to three additional passenger decks, the Dream And Fantasy are able to hold 50% more passengers and crew. These ships added “virtual portholes” in inside cabins, the Aqua Duck waterslide, Midship Detective Agency game, Remy, outside area for teens, and Venellope’s Sweets and Treats.
Note: The larger size of these ships means that you feel the sailing motion a little bit less than the smaller ships.
What to consider when choosing a ship
Destination
For some this will be what chooses the ship. Some destinations only have one ship sailing there so the choice is very easy. But some have multiple ships sailing throughout that part of the world so the decision gets a little trickier.
Where do they sail?
Disney Magic — Bahamas, Western Caribbean, Burmuda, Eastern Caribbean, Norwegian Fjords, British Isles, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Western Europe
Disney Wonder — Alaska, Bahamas, Western Caribbean, Baja, Pacific Coast, Mexican Rivera, Panama Canal,
Disney Dream — Almost all Bahamas, a tiny bit of Western Caribbean, and Eastern Caribbean
Disney Fantasy — Bahamas, Western Caribbean, Eastern Caribbean, Southern Caribbean
As you can see, if you want to sail to Alaska, California, Mexico, or the Panama Canal you will be on the Wonder. If you want to go to Europe then your choice is the Magic. To sail to the Southern Caribbean you will have to be on the Fantasy.
Now, if you want to go to the Bahamas or Western Caribbean you could sail on any ship. So, you might narrow things down by the number of nights sailing, departure port, size of ship, number of stops at Castaway Cay, or time of year you want to sail. Let’s take a look at these options now.
Nights of Sailing and Departure Port
Disney Magic–Since the Magic sails so many different itineraries, you don’t have as much choice of a sailing date if you want a specific cruise destination. Also, the Magic is the only ship out of Miami.

Days at Castaway Cay
Castaway Cay is Disney’s private island. At Castaway Cay guests get to enjoy so many beach activities and more. Relax on the beach, swim in the ocean, bike around the island, play volleyball, play on the waterslides and splash pad. There is a children’s area with Cast Members from the Oceaneer Club. And also a special area for teens. Guess what, there’s an adult only area too. Plus, all your food is provided, all day long.f
There are many itineraries that stop for one day at Castaway Cay.
All Bahamian Cruises
Caribbean Cruises out of Florida
Once in a while the Disney Dream will have two stops at Castaway Cay. If you would like to cruise on one of these itineraries get on a list with a Travel Advisor to alert you as soon as they are available.
How else can you get two stops? Often Castaway Cay lovers will take two shorter cruises back to back (b2b) in order to stop at Castaway Cay twice.
So, when you are trying to decide on a Disney Cruise ship which thing will help you choose? Is itinerary most important? The amenities on the ship? Castaway Cay? Let me know below!
There have been so many changes to Disney World so it is sometimes comforting to think about the things that haven’t. Mouthwatering Italian food is what you will find at Tony’s Town Square. Start your meal off with a nice Caesar salad or Caprese. Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen
Head into Adventureland for your reservation at the Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen (Skipper Canteen for short). This Magic Kingdom restaurant is easy to pass right by as it is tucked in just past the Sunshine Tree Terrace and across the walkway from the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse.
Bring the legacy of the Jungle Cruise to life. The skippers who guide you down the jungle rivers have opened up the doors to their kitchens to feed your famished families. There are three quirky rooms that really reflect your skippers that you might dine in:
The Crew’s Mess Hall–an actually not very messy colonial-era dining hall
The Jungle Room–the former family parlor of Dr. Albert Falls himself
The S.E.A. Room–the once-secret meeting room for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers
At this exotic outpost feast on African, South American, and Asian food with a twist fitting of the joke-cracking skippers. You might want to begin your meal with Jungle Green Salad or Lost and Found Soup (a mystery until you get there). For your meal, you might like to try Dr. Falls Signature Grilled Steak or “Tastes Like Chicken” Because it is! (crispy fried chicken with rice and veggies). Top off your meal with delicious Panna-Connie’s Congo Lime Delight or Kungaloosh!

From carefully selected excursions to the gourmet menus to the little details on each ship their dedication to you shines through. “Ama” means love and it is at the heart of everything that they do!
Already in service were over 20 fabulous river cruise ships but AmaWaterways wanted to up the ante with the AmaMagna. But, take note, this ship is twice the width but not twice the amount of passengers which means a little more elbow room (or social distance ability) for everyone. So, read on to find out how the AmaMagna might be the perfect river cruise ship for two or the whole family!

In addition, there are six Grand Suites with 474 sq. ft and the one massive Owners Suite that is a whopping 710 sq. ft! The extra room is perfect for sleeping up to 4 guests. And, of course, they are fabulous not just for the space but also the elegant, relaxing decor.

Additional Dining Venues
Every ship will have a Main Restaurant and The Chef’s Table but the AmaMagna introduces two additional delicious new venues–Jimmy’s and the Al Fresco Restaurant.
Jimmy’s is a family-style restaurant named after the late co-owner Jimmy Murphy. The Al Fresco Restaurant features vegetable-forward cuisine at this refreshing outdoor space. Both restaurants continue the AmaWaterways tradition of exquisite locally sourced cuisine.
In this expanded fitness center the opportunity to transform your body, mind, and soul awaits! Enjoy the view as you cycle on the deck outside the fitness center. Group classes led by a professionally trained wellness host are scheduled throughout your cruise. After working up a good sweat take some time to rehydrate at the juice bar with some fresh-squeezed juice. To really relax, schedule a soothing massage in one of two treatment rooms.
Movie Cinema
The AmaMagna also offers a movie cinema onboard featuring family films. During the day you will even find video games to entertain all ages of guests. Just another reason why the AmaMagna is a fantastic river cruise ship for the family!
AmaMagna is a River Cruise for families
This is one of the reasons I love AmaWaterways! Helping families, including multi-generational, connect and make memories is one of my passions as a travel advisor.
AmaWaterways definitely created AmaMagna with families in mind to river cruise together. There are multiple suites that have up to triple or quad occupancy or have the capability of connecting so the whole family can be together. Up on the deck everyone in the whole family can enjoy the pool or giant chess set. Of course, there is the cinema and video games that will definitely appeal to the younger crowd.
Worried about what your kids might want to eat? Burgers, pizza and other comfort foods are served or can be requested for lunch or dinner.
Since port days are an integral part of a river cruise there are excursions available for different abilities. Traveling with young children or family members who don’t move quite as quickly? A gentle excursion might be for you. If you are an adventurous bunch, you might want a bike tour of the town and countryside and they even have bikes for children to ride.
Check out this interview of Denisse M. telling about the things her family loved from their trip aboard the AmaMagna. She traveled with her parents, husband, and two teenage daughters.
This is a great video highlighting the great features of the AmaMagna as well as why it is so fantastic for family groups.
