There have been so many changes to Disney World so it is sometimes comforting to think about the things that haven’t. Today’s blog will cover 5 of the wonderful Table-Service Restaurants that are a Disney World staple. Let’s learn more about some great places to sit down and have a wonderful meal at some Magic Kingdom restaurants.
Important Planning Information for Magic Kingdom Restaurants
You must have a Park Reservation and Park Ticket for Magic Kingdom for each person in your party to eat at one of the Magic Kingdom restaurants.
Advanced Reservations can be made 60 days aheadonline.
Use Mobile Check-In on My Disney Experience.when you get to the restaurant.
Cashless payment is definitely recommended.
The menu might be a bit different so make sure you check it out before reserving.
Character dining is unavailable at these restaurants for the time being.
Since there is no Disney Dining Plan right now you will have to pay for your meal when you dine.
Health and Safety Measures to Know at Magic Kingdom Restaurants
Enhanced Cleaning: We’ve increased cleaning in high-traffic areas such as public elevators and escalators, handrails, benches, tables, handles, restrooms and more. Additionally, seating areas, dining areas and pagers will be cleaned between Guests.
Reduced-Contact Menus: Menus will be shared in ways to minimize contact. At quick-service restaurants, menus will be displayed on signage. And at table-service restaurants, you can scan a code with your mobile device to access the digital menu.
Self-Serve Changes: Beverages and other items that were previously self-serve will instead be served by Cast Members.
Face coverings for each Guest age 2 and up, which must be worn in all public areas—including while entering and exiting dining locations—and can be removed while eating or drinking
Be Our Guest Restaurant
As you step out of Fantasyland and into the Be Our Guest Restaurant you will feel transported right into the castle of Belle and the Beast! You have three rooms to choose from:
The Grand Ballroom – Go for baroque in this magnificent ballroom with its high, domed ceiling, chandeliers and snow-laced Gothic arches.
The West Wing – Dine in the Beast’s mysterious West Wing study—if you dare—and perhaps you’ll even spy his enchanted rose.
The Castle Gallery – Get swept up in the romance of Belle’s private library, and inspired by the larger-than-life figures of Belle and Beast dancing.
At the Be Our Guest Restaurant both adults and children have the freedom to choose your own 3-course French-inspired prix-fixe meal. You might choose to start your meal with French Onion Soup or Maine Lobster Bisque. You might follow with Center-cut Filet Mignon or Roasted Corn and Spinach Tortellini. For dessert, treat yourself to a rich Dark Chocolate Truffle or a lighter Lemon Jam Macaron. Whatever you choose you will be delighted by your time at this restaurant!
Liberty Tree Tavern
The Liberty Tree Tavern dishes up the ultimate comfort foods for lunch and dinner. This family-style restaurant is right in the heart of Liberty Square. At this Colonial-style restaurant, you will dine on delicious New England inspired food as you sit in one of the six dining rooms that reflect American historical figures:

This is a perfect place to celebrate Thanksgiving!
Since this is a family-style restaurant you table will be brought plates full of crispy salad and then the Patriot’s Platter. The Patriot’s Platter includes Roasted Turkey Breast, Pot Roast, and Oven-roasted Pork with Mashed Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables, Herb Stuffing, and House-made Macaroni and Cheese.
If you would like a meatless option they have a Plant-based Impossible™ Meatloaf.
For dessert you can indulge in the Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake or the plant based Johnny Appleseed Warm Apple Cake. YUMMY!
The Plaza Restaurant
The elegant turn-of-the-century atmosphere sets the stage for a delicious meal at the Plaza Restaurant. Take a step back to the early 20th Century as you enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. You will find this restaurant at the end of Main Street with a beautiful view of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.
Bring back yesteryear and get to eat some of your old favorites. Choose from deli-sandwiches, Cheese Steak Sandwiches, burgers or meatloaf. For dessert you will not want to miss out on the chocolate cake or delicious milkshakes. Since there is a ice cream shop close by you may also induldge in a fantastic Banana Split or Brownie Sundae. There is a nice selection of choices on the kids menu also.
Tony’s Town Square Restaurant
“When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore!” That is also how you will feel when eating at Tony’s Town Square Italian Restaurant. But this is no ordinary Italian restaurant. This is the restaurant where Lady and the Tramp fell in love! Tony’s Town Square sits right on the hub of Main Street and offers some fun people watching.
Mouthwatering Italian food is what you will find at Tony’s Town Square. Start your meal off with a nice Caesar salad or Caprese. Move on to your main entree and choose from classics like Spaghetti, Chicken Parmesana or Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo. Cap off your meal with a delicious dessert of Tiramisu or Cannoli.
Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen
Head into Adventureland for your reservation at the Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen (Skipper Canteen for short). This Magic Kingdom restaurant is easy to pass right by as it is tucked in just past the Sunshine Tree Terrace and across the walkway from the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse.
Bring the legacy of the Jungle Cruise to life. The skippers who guide you down the jungle rivers have opened up the doors to their kitchens to feed your famished families. There are three quirky rooms that really reflect your skippers that you might dine in:
The Crew’s Mess Hall–an actually not very messy colonial-era dining hall
The Jungle Room–the former family parlor of Dr. Albert Falls himself
The S.E.A. Room–the once-secret meeting room for the Society of Explorers and Adventurers
At this exotic outpost feast on African, South American, and Asian food with a twist fitting of the joke-cracking skippers. You might want to begin your meal with Jungle Green Salad or Lost and Found Soup (a mystery until you get there). For your meal, you might like to try Dr. Falls Signature Grilled Steak or “Tastes Like Chicken” Because it is! (crispy fried chicken with rice and veggies). Top off your meal with delicious Panna-Connie’s Congo Lime Delight or Kungaloosh!

This is one of the reasons I love AmaWaterways! Helping families, including multi-generational, connect and make memories is one of my passions as a travel advisor.
AmaWaterways definitely created AmaMagna with families in mind to river cruise together. There are multiple suites that have up to triple or quad occupancy or have the capability of connecting so the whole family can be together. Up on the deck everyone in the whole family can enjoy the pool or giant chess set. Of course, there is the cinema and video games that will definitely appeal to the younger crowd.
Worried about what your kids might want to eat? Burgers, pizza and other comfort foods are served or can be requested for lunch or dinner.
Since port days are an integral part of a river cruise there are excursions available for different abilities. Traveling with young children or family members who don’t move quite as quickly? The United States might not have centuries-old castles and buildings or baroque and gothic architecture but there are some stunning natural landscapes and fascinating natural wonders. The Adventures by Disney tour experience is definitely at the head of the pack when it comes to guided tours!
Exploring Wyoming
Through this tour Adventures by Disney designs a tour to help you experience the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks in ways that you probably haven’t before. Your Adventure Guides bring the stories of these two parks to life as you visit and explore these areas.
Most of the activites on this tour are relatively gentle but when you add them altogether some travelers might find them strenuous. Sometimes there are other options that are more relaxing and you always have a choice of your activities on the last couple of days.
While the hotel accomodations are wonderful they don’t always have as much in the way of television and internet access. Internet might only be available in the common areas. What a great opportunity to unplug and spend time on the people who really matter.
Let’s get started on this tour and see what could be in your family’s future!
Day 1–Jackson Hole, WY
Today you fly into the airport in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. One of your Adventure Guides meets you at the airport, helps you get your luggage and then drives you to the hotel you will be staying at for the next couple nights. At dinner you will meet the other families in your group and feast on cowboy grub and music. Tomorrow the adventures begin!
Day 2–Jackson Hole, WY
After breakfast head out on the town as a family to explore the scenic town of Jackson which is known as the “Gateway to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks.” There are so many fun shops to wander in and out of that everyone will enjoy.
Jackson Hole Playhouse will be your lunch destination for yummy Western food and a rip-roarin’ rolickin’ good show.
After lunch you will head to the Snake River for some awesome whitewater rafting through the wilderness.
The evening is free for you to wander around Jackson. You might want to pick up some western gear! There are some fantastic restaurants in the area so be sure to ask your Adventure Guide for recommendations.
Day 3–Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park

It’s an early morning breakfast before making your way to Grand Tetons National Park. Here, you will be joined by a local expert for a bicycle tour stopping at major highlights like Mormon Row and Moulton Barn. Not interested in biking? That’s just fine! You can spend time enjoying the visitors center and hiking some of the gorgeous trails.
Following a beautiful drive up to Jackson Lake, you eat your fill for lunch at the Jackson Lake Lodge. Lunch is overlooking the picturesque views of the Teton Range outside and the beautifully painted mural of the range painted by American artist, Carl Roters in the late 20th-century.
The road to Yellowstone National Park takes you through the northern part of Grand Tetons National Park. Once arriving at Yellowstone you get to explore the amazing geysers, mudpots and geothermal phenomena with a scavenger hunt at West Thumb Geyser Basin. What an amazing start!
Settle in to your room right within walking distance of Old Faithful Geyser. Before dinner you will want to try and see the geyser explode. Old Faithful isn’t one of the most spectacular geysers (yet, it is VERY cool!) in Yellowstone but it erupts the most frequently.

Dinner will be at the historic Old Faithful Inn. What an experience! After dinner young travelers will have a fantastic time learning more about geysers and get to make their own eruptions!
Day 4–Yellowstone National Park to Brooks Lake Lodge
Make sure you have a hearty breakfast for this full day! Start out on an excursion on the Lower loop. You will see some of the parks most awe-inspiring thermal features like Old Faithful, Hayden Valley, Artist Point, the Upper and Lower Waterfalls and the spectacular Lake Yellowstone.
One of the highlights will be a privately guided tour of the Fountain Paint Pot Trail. Be awestruck by the spectacular blue pools, pink mudpots, minigeysers and the hissing steam vents also know as fumaroles.
Fill up your hungry stomachs at the Canyon Village Lounge to get ready for your afternoon adventures. You will love hiking around the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. Stay at the top and marvel at the moss-covered rock, and the multitude of colors on the walls created by the mineral stains. Or, head down and get a little closer and a little wetter.

Take a load off your feet for a bit aboard a motorcoach through the Hayden Valley. This is a wildlife paradise so keep your eyes open for elk, grizzly bears, and bison roaming around. Say a fond farewell to Yellowstone!
Your Wyoming Adventures by Disney adventure takes you to Brooks Lake Lodge which will be a welcomed sight after your busy day. This historic lodge and dude ranch will be your home base for your last few days. This 100-year old lodge combines country living and outdoor adventure with outstanding accommodations, gourmet dining, and 5-star service. They even have a wonderfully relaxing spa for an additional fee. After dinner this evening there isn’t anything scheduled to give you a little time to rest and relax.
Day 5–Brooks Lake Lodge
Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided during the day at the lodge. Delicious food will be served in the Great Hall giving you a bit of time to recharge from the activities of the day.
Today will be filled with so many awesome outdoor activities to choose from. You will get to choose an activity from this list for the morning and the afternoon.
Horseback Trail Ride with Cowboys–Explore the mountains with a real cowboy. Learn to rope, ride, hoot, and holler from the best!
Fly-Fishing–No matter what your skill level you will have a fantastic fishing experience.
Hiking–Take a leisurely stroll along the nature trails around the lodge or a rigorous hike up Brooks Mountain to the top of the Continental Divide.
Canoeing–Paddle through the serene waters of this mountain lake.
Archery–Take aim with target practice with the Rocky Mountains as the backdrop.
After dinner watch a classic Disney film in a storybook setting.
Day 6–Brooks Lake Lodge
There are so many fantastic activities around the Lodge that you will have another day to experience activities you didn’t get to yesterday or repeat the things you loved. These two days are perfect for connecting with your family in new and different ways.
The farewell dinner this evening is the perfect end to a fabulous vacation. Relive the memories with your family of all the amazing adventures during the week. Say goodbye to the new friends you have made along the way.
Day 7–Brooks Lake to Jackson Hole, WY
Following breakfast, you will be taken back to the airport in Jackson Hole. This is the sad end of your Wyoming Adventures by Disney tour but it doesn’t have to be the end of your vacation. You can always spend a little more time in the area. More exploration of the Grand Tetons might be calling your name.

Let’s start with the Key Dates!
For 2020 Disney World Vacations
If you have a current Disney World Resort reservation in 2020 and park tickets then you will want to immediately get started with the Park Pass System for reserving park days for your trip. This also applies to those with resort reservations and annual passes. You may book as many reservations as your tickets allow (or length of resort stay with an Annual Pass).
If you have Annual Passes (no resort stay) you may begin reserving park days through the Park Pass System on June 26th. You may book through 9/26/2021 but will have a limited number of reservations available.
If you have Disney World tickets but resort booked then you may begin reserving your park days through the Park Pass System on June 28th. You can reserve through 9/26/2021.
If you have booked a Disney World resort but do not have tickets you are able to purchase them now.

For 2021 Disney World Vacations
Brand new bookings for Disney World resort vacations with tickets in 2021 will be available to book on June 28th (but, I have it on good authority that they are available as early as June 24th). Woohoo!!!
But, the process is a little bit different now since you will be required to reserve your park days with the Park Pass System through September 26, 2021. A travel agent will be a plethora of information to help you with the planning process for your Disney World vacation in 2020 or 2021.
Make park reservations through the Park Pass System ASAP
Where’s the Park Pass System?
Your My Disney Experience app/website should become your new best friend when planning your Disney World vacation in 2020 or 2021. If you don’t have a My Disney Experience account you will need to set one up. If you have one from a cruise or Disneyland, you will use that same login. If you would like, your travel agent can walk you through the process.
The 1st very important step is to link your Resort reservations and tickets to your My Disney Experience site (this can be done by you or your travel agent).
The 2nd very important step is to reserve your park days through the Park Pass System on the My Disney Experience website (the website works better than the app). This must be done by YOU but your travel agent can walk you through the process. You will find the Park Pass System in the drop-down menu at My Disney Experience.

Adjustments to Disney World experiences and dining
You should definitely check out this site during your planning process before you purchase your tickets. You will want to make sure that the current procedures are ones that wouldn’t be detrimental to your vacation.
More Important Items
Park Hopping is not available during this time. You are limited to one park per day. Make sure that you plan your dining around the park you are scheduled to be in that day
Advanced Dining Reservations can be made 60 days before your stay. Dining plans are not available now so you will have to pay out of pocket for meals. Dining locations are also limiting the number of diners so be flexible with your options.
Fast Passes are not available either in order to make more room for guests to social distance while standing in line. One less thing to worry about, right!
Both a Park Reservation and a Park Ticket (and dated for the same day) are required for entry in to a theme park. This is so important which is why I am stating it again!
Face Coverings are required for all guest 2 and up, in the theme parks and Disney Springs.
Temperature screenings will be required upon entering theme parks and Disney Springs. If anyone has a temperature of greater than 100.4 degrees then the whole party will be denied entry.
Photopass photographers are not allowed to take pictures with your personal cell phone or camera. If this prompts you to purchase a Memory Maker package make sure that you purchase at least 3 days ahead of your vacation at a slightly discounted price.
What else will be different?
All events that bring large groups of people together in a close area are canceled for now. These events include parades, nighttime spectaculars, character breakfasts, playgrounds, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, H2O Glow Nights, among others.
Special tours and dining experiences will also have to be put off until a future Disney World vacation as well as character breakfasts and Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique.

Traditional character greetings are suspended at this time. BUT, that doesn’t mean you won’t see characters. They will be out and about in different ways and full of surprises!

Oh my goodness, so much!
Most all of the attractions will be open and ready for guest to enjoy such as Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Rise of the Resistance, Space Mountain, the Jungle Cruise, Kilimanjaro Safaris and so much more! Even Spaceship Earth will be open as they are pausing the refurbishment schedule. So cool!

PLUS, Disney Imagineers are hard at work planning all kinds of things to make your trip special.
Beloved characters will appear in new and different ways that bring a smile to your face while also being mindful of physical distancing. From special cavalcades down the Magic Kingdom Park parade route and friends sailing the waterways of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, to processions along the World Showcase promenade at EPCOT and motorcades on Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ Hollywood Boulevard, each area will come to life throughout the day. You never know when a party of your pals may come by, so be prepared for plenty of surprises!
For example, after rocketing through space in Tomorrowland guests might see that famous Space Ranger, Buzz Lightyear; or discover a captive Captain Jack Sparrow as they traverse the Castillo del Morro on their way to Pirates of the Caribbean. Guests could cross paths with Queen Anna and Elsa as they venture “into the unknown” on a journey around World Showcase at EPCOT or spy members of the Resistance hiding out from the First Order throughout Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu.
ALSO, they are tweaking and modifying the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival to begin in July and run through the fall. You will also get a small glimpse of the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival. How cool is that!! Find out a little more here.
A Walt Disney World Vacation during this time will be truly memorable. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity (hopefully) to experience Disney World like this.

Where can we travel in the United States this summer?
We have been cooped up the last few month but hings are starting to open up. Some of us are not quite ready to travel and that is okay. But some of us might be getting the bug to get out and see somewhere other than our own city. There are so many awesome places to explore when you are traveling in the US this summer.
Obviously, this blog won’t be exhaustive of the possible vacation destinations throughout the United States. Hopefully this will get you started thinking and dreaming for this summer or possibly next.
East Coast
Florida has some wonderful beach options. Florida is open up to people from all states except the Tri-State area.

St. Augustine–awesome beaches and history from the Spanish exploration

Florida Keys (this could be a challenge to book as it is pretty popular this summer but)
Orlando just begs to be mentioned! Universal Studios Orlando, Sea World, and Legoland are currently open. Disney World will be opening mid-July. These theme parks are open with health and safety precautions put in place which will give visitors an experience that is magical but not quite the same as usual.
Georgia has some fantastic options. You can actually travel in just this state and hit the beaches, mountains, and fabulous historic cities.
Jekyll Island–a wonderful beach town
Savannah
Stone Mountain–a beautiful area full of outdoor activities and attractions. You can even stay in a treehouse on a farm. How cool is that!
Virginia has something for everyone–beaches, vast history, and scenic mountains and rolling hills.

Williamsburg–Living History museums, spas, theme parks, biking, hiking and golf. What more could anyone want?
Hot Springs–This historic spa destination has some beautiful resorts.
North Carolina is another fantastic US vacation destination.

Ashville–The (almost) beginning of the Blue Ridge Highway and the Biltmore Estate. This is actually such a beautiful place to vacation in the fall with the amazing fall foliage.

National Parks
Visiting National Parks is an excellent way to spend your summer vacation. NPS.GOV is where you can start your research. National Parks are some of my favorite places to explore while traveling in the US during the summer.
What if we want to see a National Park but don’t want the stress of planning?
There are a couple of tour companies who are ready to help!
National Parks of the American West–National Geographic Journeys
Spend 15 days in October to visit Zion and Bryce Canyon in Utah, then the Grand Canyon and Route 66 in Arizona before heading to Death Valley, Sequoia, King’s Canyon and Yosemite.
There is also an 8 day option that focuses on the breathtaking canyons in Utah and Arizona.
These are small group tours that will fill up quickly!
Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons

Book this 8-day tour of the Grand Tetons (one of my absolute favorite National Parks) and Yellowstone for your whole family this August. Since this is a family journey there are special activities to really bring children into the history, geography and beauty of the area. (ages 7+)

Arizona and Utah–Adventures by Disney
Do you love Disney service? Well, how about taking a tour of this beautiful country designed by Disney! This 8-day trip will take you through Arizona making sure to get plenty of time at the Grand Canyon. Then you will head to Monument Valley and Arches National Parks in Utah. You will finish up in Grand Junction, CO. On this trip, you will experience activities that you couldn’t anywhere else with any other company.
Washington DC and Philadelphia
There is one adult-only trip in September ready to show the wonders and history of Washington DC and Philadelphia. By taking a coordinated tour you are able to get into places that it is very difficult to get in on your own. Such a great way to make some once-in-a-lifetime memories.
River Cruise US Rivers this Summer
Just because we cannot go to Europe this summer doesn’t mean that you can’t go on a river cruise! This year consider taking a river cruise on the Mississippi, the Cumberland, Ohio, Tennessee, Snake, or the Columbia Rivers. You can even cruise on a small ship down the Southeast coast.
An American river cruise will introduce you to cities and towns that make up the heart and soul of our great country. Your riverboat journeys down the smooth American waterways with the land never far out of sight and beautiful landscapes nearly close enough to touch. Plus, throught the cruise you have the opportunity to learn about the geography, history and culture of the places you visit both onboard and during shore excursions. What a unique way to learn about and enjoy our country!

Universal Studios in Orlando is the first theme park to open back up (on June 5th) after the pandemic closures. They have revamped their procedures to keep all their guests safe and healthy.
Universal Studios in Orlando consists of 2 theme parks (Universal Studios Orlando–USO, and Islands of Adventure–IOA) and a water park (Volcano Bay). Universal has sometimes been called the grown up version of Disney World. If you are wanting thrills and chills, then Universal is the place for you!
There are lots of great things to love about Universal Studios. But, this blog is going to cover just 5 things that we loved from our last trip.
5 Things to Love About Universal Studios
1) Hogwarts Express
Hogwarts Express at King’s Cross Station in Diagon Alley
Hogwarts Express is the train that takes guests from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter–Diagon Alley (USO) to Hogsmeade (IOA). The King’s Cross Train Station was so awesome to walk through. There are so many great details to make the walk through the station more interesting. The best part was the view out the window. How the creators take you through the countryside is awe-inspiring. The drama in the coach during the ride was very cool too.
You must have Park-to-Park tickets to ride the Hogwarts Express. For our family it was complely worth the extra cost. The train was a ride in itself and we went back and forth quite a few times during the day.
2) Interactive Wands from Ollivanders

Even the purchase of a wand from Ollivanders ($52 as of March 2020) is an event in and of itself. They make it quite fun as your wand picks YOU! After purchase you get to take your wand all over the two Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter looking for the special mediallions embedded in the ground (a map is also provided). Each time you discover a midallion stand upon it and wave your wand, cast a spell and see what happens. It is so exciting to anticipate what is going to happen each and every time. There are a few surprise locations so keep an eye out for those–check out the Slug ‘n Jug and take a look at your map in Knockturn Alley).
The interactive wand is definitely an extra. Your visit will be wonderful even if you don’t purchase one the first time you visit. In fact, finding the medallions takes time from your day so you might want to save it for a second or third visit. We were lucky to follow my neice along on her adventures through the Wizarding World. Oh, by the way, the wand will work for you each and every trip to Universal Studios.
3) The Attention to Detail
The attention to details is over the top at Universal Studios in Orlando. From the streets of San Francisco and New York to Diagon Alley in Universal Studios you are surrounded by buildings, shops, and rides that bring you right into that world. Even the ride queues are unbelievable with all the little things they include to bring you into the story. So awesome!
4) Staying at a Universal Resort
When you stay at a Universal Resort you can take advantage of Early Entrance to the theme parks. It was so great to be able to get into the park early. There were hardly any people and we could get onto rides so quickly. Loved that!
The other super cool thing about staying at a Universal Resort is that if you stay in a deluxe resort such as the Lowes Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel Orlando, and Lowes Portofino Bay Hotel you also get a Universal Express Pass for every member of your party. This is good for your entire stay. You can even check in early and use the pass on check in day. The benefit of the Express pass can be well worth the extra cost of the resort.
Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure was definitely my FAVORITE activity at Universal Studios. We waited for over an hour for this ride the first time and we loved it so much we thought the hour was totally worth it and we did it again later. I have NEVER EVER waited for an hour for a ride and thought it was that worth it. The queue was pretty cool too.
There were so many awesome things about this ride. The ride vehicle was fun no matter which position you take. Both the motorcycle and the sidecar are great fun. The smooth speed of the ride was fantastic. There is enough excitement but not super scary. The scenery that you fly through is magical. I loved the forest. Then, the greatest thing is the story throughout and the surprise along the way! I cannot express how much I LOVED this ride!!!

Are you someone who likes to go off the beaten path? Do you like to blaze your own trail? Then today’s post might be just for you. Wait, you say! I like to stick to the normal stuff. Okay, for those of you who stick to the popular attractions let me encourage you to try something new.
Here we go! 5 unusual things to love at EPCOT!
1) Garden Railway at the Germany Pavilion
As you walk from the Italy Pavillion just before you arrive at the Germany Pavillion you will see a little path go off to the right. Take this little path, the Romantic Road, from the tiny town of Wurzburg to Fusser. Along the way view the miniature mid-century Bavarian town, landscaping, and Lehmann Gross Bahn trains. The gentle movement of the train through the village is quite mesmerizing. Remember, there is a lot more park to see so don’t stay all day.
2) Bijutsu-kan Gallery
Deep in the heart of the Japan Pavillion is the Bijutsu-kan Gallery. You will be delighted to find a very fun and cute exhibit called Kawaii: Japan’s Cute Culture. This small gallery will introduce you to the part of Japanese culture that celebrates “cute” in every facet of life through an “apartment” display. Learn how it is rooted in their Shinto past and brought forth to today. What a great way to take a few minutes away from the busyness of the park and enjoy a little sweetness!
3) Baguettes at Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie

Take a walk all the way throught the France Pavillion, under the archway, past the quaint cafe seating to the wonderful quick-service French bakery, Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie. As you stand in the generally long line eyeing all the wonderful selections (Don’t worry, drooling is normal!) you are actually thankful for the time to make the tough decisions. I am not usually swayed from my objective, a whole chewy delicious baguette, butter and a Coke. At least a couple times during my trip will this be my lunch (and inexpensive too!). Just thinking about these baguettes has me longing to go back!
4) Bruce the Shark
????? you say! Hear me out. You will find Bruce the Shark after riding The Seas with Nemo and Friends (I love this ride!). After exiting the ride you enter SeaBase. This area is full of live sea creatures in one of the largest man-made ocean environments on the planet and many interactive learning displays. But, my kids always gravitate toward Bruce the Shark and the simple play area that surrounds him. No matter what their age my kids always take a turn getting a picture. This is also a great place to wait for my #5 pick.
5) Turtle Talk w/ Crush
Turtle Talk with Crush is one of the highlights of every trip. This isn’t so unusual but is often overlooked. You will find the entrance to Turtle Talk with Crush inside SeaBase (on the left after you exit The Seas with Nemo and Friends). Since this is a show you might have to wait a few minutes until the next show. This is a very family-friendly activity that is accessible to all. As you go in the children will be directed to sit on the floor in the front (if they would like) and the accompanying adults may sit on the benches. There is lots of room so you shouldn’t have to wait more than one show unless it is really busy. The show is hosted by Crush and he loves to talk with the audience through his special Hydraphone. Each show is so unique Such fun!
Bonus Thing to love:) Gran Fiesta Tour
Like #5 the Gran Fiesta Tour is not too unusual of a thing to love at Epcot since it is one of the rides but because it is hidden inside the Mexico Pavillion it can often be forgotten. I am a sucker for a gentle boat ride with lots of fun, colorful, entertaining displays. This is a great ride on a hot day when you want to spend a little time out of the sweltering heat. After you ride you might want to peruse all of the souvenirs from Mexico.

In my humble opinion, Alaska is the best state to visit! There is so much to see and do and it is so different from so many places in the Lower 48. I know, I am slightly biased because I live in this great state but just go with me. Follow along with me as I introduce you to cruising in Alaska!
So, right now cruising in Alaska isn’t possible. At least not until after July 1, 2020, but as we know, that date is very fluid. If you are would like to have a little more certainty about your travel, now is a great time to put my blog from a couple of weeks ago into practice.
Visiting Alaska on a Cruise Ship
(Not just for visitors but Alaskans too)
Today I want to talk about visiting Alaska by sea, meaning from walking off of a cruise ship. Cruising in Alaska is a fantastic way to see Southeast. In fact, many people on cruise ships have seen more of this part of our state than Alaska residents. Except for Skagway and Haines we are unable to drive to this part of our state. I have lived in Alaska my entire life and only saw Juneau and Ketchikan last summer. I will say that my kids have probably seen a little more than I have since they go on roadtrips to play teams in these faraway locations. So, Alaskans you can benefit from an Alaska Cruise too. But, I digress.
Let’s talk about how you can see Alaska by sea on an Alaska Cruise whether you are a tourist or a resident!
Cruise Ship Departure Ports
Round Trip Cruise Itinerary
Round trip cruises begin and end in Vancouver, BC, Canada; Seattle, Washington; or San Francisco, California. These itineraries go up the coast through the Inside Passage and turn around stopping at Alaskan port towns on the way there and back. Round trip itineraries can be less expensive due to not having to purchase a ticket to/from Alaska.

One Way Cruise Itinerary
On a one way cruise (my favorite way to see Alaska by sea) you begin in Vancouver, BC, Canada or Seattle, Washington and sail up to Alaska where the cruise ends. You can also begin in Alaska and sail the other direction. I highly recommend these cruises because you also see Southcentral Alaska which is VERY different from Southeast.
The Alaskan port depends on the cruise line you choose to sail with. The possibilities are Seward, AK (most common, pronounced Sue’-werd), Whittier, AK, and sometimes Anchorage, AK. Seward is approximately 2.5 hours from Anchorage (major airport), and Whittier is about 1 hour. I highly recommend Seward as a port of call since it is a very cute little town and the drive to Anchorage is very beautiful. Whittier, while beautiful, is mainly a harbor. But, the tunnel is pretty cool and the drive along the Turnagain Arm into Anchorage is beautiful (you drive the same portion from Seward too).
Other benefits of a one-way Alaska cruise include more glacier experiences and more stops at Alaskan ports. One-way itineraries usually include scenic cruising through Glacier Bay/Hubbard Glacier. Also, you get to see more of Alaska since you stop at more ports in Alaska since ships from Seattle must stop in Canada. If you desire, you can also add a cruisetour to visit the Interior or your add your own touring days.

Most every cruise line sails to Alaska so you have so many choices! They all know that a great way to see Alaska is by sea. The main line cruise companies have pretty standard ports of call–Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, and Skagway. But the Luxury lines have some amazing and unusual Alaskan ports as well as different US departure ports and even some across the Pacific Ocean.

Alaskan Coastal Towns
Most port towns in Alaska are small and quaint. You can easily walk from the ship into the town. One of the great things about ports in Alaska is the accessibility for those who have mobility issues. These towns also have transportation readily available at the dock for those who didn’t book an excursion and want to explore on their own.
Below is a list of towns you might visit on your adventure cruising in Alaska. A short description is included and soon you will be able to click on the town to get to a post with a bit more information.
Seward, AK
Seward, Alaska is the beginning or ending point for many cruise itineraries. This is a great little town to visit before or after your cruise. There is some great restaurants, hiking, and shopping. Transportation is available to take you into the town of Seward or to Anchorage.
Whittier, AK
Whittier, AK is the other beginning or ending point for a few select itineraries. This port is closer to Anchorage. Whitter consists mainly of the boat harbor and a few businesses. There are some fantastic glacier cruises out of Whittier and some beautiful hiking (one hike goes up the hill for some gorgeous panoramic views). Transportation is available to take you through the tunnel to Anchorage.
Anchorage, AK
Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and the beginning and end for a very few cruise itineraries. It is a large city with tons to do. This is where you will fly in and out of for your Alaskan adventure. It may not be where you will want to spend a lot of your vacation since it is a city but it definitely has its charms.
Juneau, AK
Juneau, AK is our capital city. It is the third-largest city (but it is only a little smaller than Fairbanks) in Alaska. Juneau has some fantastic glacier excursions you can take or make your way on your own. In town, you will find plenty of shopping, restaurants, Alaska history, and even Starbucks.
Ketchikan, AK
Ketchikan is a small fishing town with lots to see and do. It looks like the town is perched on a hill and is a fantastic place to be out on the deck viewing the scenery as you come in and out (really, don’t miss this!). As the “Salmon Capital of the World”, this is a great place for fishing charters. Ketchikan is also home to some wonderful opportunities to learn more about Alaskan Native culture.
Sitka, AK
Sitka, AK is another quaint Alaskan fishing village. They have an amazing music festival here during the summer.
Icy Strait Point, AK
Icy Strait Point, AK is a tourist destination created by the people and Native corporations of Hoona, AK. Right off the boat (there is a really nice gangway) you come to a visitor’s center which has a lot of information. They can connect you with tours, excursions, and their ropes course. The town of Hoona, just a 5-10 minute shuttle ride or a 20-30 minute walk along the coast, is more typical of Alaskan towns and a little less touristy. This town has quite a different feel than the other port towns.
Skagway, AK
Skagway, AK brings you back to the Klondike Gold Rush days of old. Sprinkled among the tourist stores you will discover quite a few interesting museums with lots of information on the Alaska Gold Rush. One of the highlights of Skagway is the White Pass Railroad which follows the arduous path the prospectors took years ago.
Haines, AK
If you have a chance to take a cruise that stops at Haines seriously consider that itinerary. Haines, AK was settled in a gorgeous setting in between two waterways. Haines is similar to Skagway with it’s own Gold Rush History to satisfy any history buff. It is a small town with a small port, fitting for only one large ship and possibly a small ship too. As a result, Haines seems a lot less touristy. You also have the option of taking a 45 minute Fast Ferry over to Skagway from Haines.
