So your family has decided to all get together for a fantastic cruise vacation. It has been so long since you have seen each other. All the family has decided that a cruise will be a perfect vacation. A cruise will give each family a chance to have fun together and then there will be time for the whole family to spend as a large group. But, before you book your cabins you are wondering if there is anything that you should consider. I am going to share with you what I think are 3 must-haves when you are going to go on a cruise with your extended family. So, here goes, my 3 must-haves for your family reunion cruise vacation!
#1 Book a Balcony Stateroom
I think that balcony staterooms are the Bomb! (Especially, if you have young children that need naptime or just time to get away from the hubbub.) Your balcony is the perfect place to get away and have a few minutes to yourself. Even if you love your family dearly it is nice to have a quiet, tranquil place to hang out where no one can find you. It is also perfect for when you want some interrupted time to connect away from the ship’s activities.
Now, if you have young children I think a balcony is a definite necessity. A balcony gives you the ability to have your child nap and you still get to enjoy the sunshine, warm weather, fresh air, and sounds of the ocean. It can be a wonderful relaxation time for you as well as the kids. If you only have an interior or oceanview room you might feel cooped up or resentful of not being able to enjoy outside.
#2 Linked Dining Reservations
One of my most favorite things to do on a family reunion cruise is to eat dinner all together as a family. Sitting in the dining room all together taking the time to eat a meal is a wonderful experience. Everyone has the chance to talk about their day, all the fun they had, and what they want to do tomorrow. It’s a great place to catch up together and enjoy each other’s company. But, in order to get tables together, you will want to have your dining reservations linked together when you book.
#3 Spirit of Compromise
This must-have is actually true for the whole planning and traveling process. Each family in your larger family will have specific needs and wants. Since it is everyone’s vacation, everyone should feel like their feelings are being considered. But this also means that everyone will need to give on some things. For instance, your family just cannot handle a late dinner seating but there is another family that really wants to do some excursions that will return during the early dinner time. So, maybe on those days, you all agree to meet for breakfast or just let them skip those nights and catch up the next day. If everyone has the spirit of compromise instead of just wanting their vacation their way then it can be more fun for all.
So, what do you think? Do you have another must-have for a family reunion cruise? I would love to hear your suggestion. Just comment below!

Polynesian Cultural Center
The Polynesian Cultural Center draws guest in and immerses them in the different cultures of the Polynesian Islands. You can wander through the villages of Hawaii, Aotearoa, Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga. While you explore each village you can learn more about the culture through stories, hands-on workshops, dance, music, games and food.
Throughout the day you can learn a native dance, how to weave with leaves, or throw a spear. For those in your group who don’t want to be as active they can enjoy a listening to a talk about the history of the country, attend a marriage ceremony, watch a cooking demonstration, or sit and enjoy in the beautiful atmosphere. The whole area is very stroller and wheelchair friendly.
At night the Polynesian Cultural Center comes alive even more. The Ali’i Luau Buffet is a fun way to eat and enjoy a show. At the buffet, you will fill up on authentic Polynesian favorites. Then you will enjoy the family-friendly luau show. The audience participation brings some extra fun.
After this show, you can choose to attend the amazing Ha Breath of Life Show. It is truly an experience to behold with beautiful dancing, and music, exciting special effects, and heart-stopping, blazing, twirling fireknives.
Kualoa Ranch Private Nature Reserve
Kualoa Ranch is on the east side of the island of Oahu in a gorgeous tropical setting. The ranch is high up on the hillside with breathtaking views of the island and ocean. They strive to protect and enhance the land while providing recreational activities for guests. The tours provide Kualoa Ranch the opportunity to keep the land undeveloped for future generations.
Kualoa Ranch was the setting of parts of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World and of course, they have a tour to show you all the fun spots. They also have a tour of other famous Hollywood movie sights. They provide so many different ways to show you their beautiful land–jeep, ATV, horseback, electric mountain bike, bus, or zipline. And, if you don’t want to go on a tour then you can just have a delicious homecooked Hawaiian meal at Auntie Pat’s Cafe.
What makes Kualoa Ranch great for families is the wide variety of activities. Since they have so many different ways to tour there is something that will work for everyone. If you have family that are too young or don’t want all the bumping and jarring of the jeep or ATV tours they provide a nice bus option. Kualoa Ranch Private Nature Preserve is an excellent day trip activity for everyone to enjoy while you are vacationing in Oahu, Hawaii.
Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Historic Sites
Pearl Harbor National Memorial is one of the must-do Oahu activities. Through the USS Arizona Memorial and other historic sites you will get a fuller picture of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the military forces in the Pacific during WWII.
At the USS Arizona Memorial, you have the chance to remember those who lost their lives on that fateful day, December 7, 1941. For kids, there is a Junior Ranger program to help kids understand the significance of this memorial. There is also a movie and exhibits to enjoy.
Other Pearl Harbor Historic Sites
In the area, but not run by the National Parks Service are some other historical sites that are very interesting. Tickets and transportation can be arranged at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.
Battleship Missouri Memorial–The USS Missouri was the last battleship commissioned by the United States. The Japanese signed their surrender onboard, ending WWII. They have tours or you can go at your own pace.
USS Bowfin Submarine Museum–The USS Bowfin launched one year after the attack and was nicknamed the Pearl Harbor Avenger. She is permanently homeported at Pearl Harbor and guests can take a tour through the submarine.
Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum–This museum is housed in two hangars and the Ford Island Control Tower. The exhibits focus not only on the events of Pearl Harbor but also on the entire war in the Pacific. You will see a lot of aircraft used throughout the war, some even still have battle scars.
If you are traveling with very young children you can use a stroller in many places. The USS Missouri is stroller and wheelchair accessible. The USS Bowfin doesn’t allow children under 4 on the submarine, but they can enjoy the grounds while waiting for other family members to finish the tour (supervised of course).
If you have family members who aren’t as mobile there can be quite a bit of walking. They might want to stick to the USS Arizona and the hangar at the Aviation Museum with the exhibits (the hangar with more planes is fantastic but is pretty large). The USS Bowfin isn’t very large but the space is pretty cramped and the stairs are very steep. On the USS Missouri, they don’t have to visit every part. Just being on the battleship and seeing the scale is pretty awesome. There are elevators to some of the decks for wheelchair access.
There are so many different activities to choose while in Oahu, Hawaii. But these are such great ones that will appeal to just about everyone in your group of family or friends. You’re gonna love them!

Well, cruise ships aren’t going to be sailing to Alaska this summer but that doesn’t mean that you still can’t visit Alaska. As I have said before, there is so much more in Alaska than what you see from a cruise ship. Let this be the year that you see more of the state of Alaska. And, traveling on the Alaska Railroad is the perfect way to do it. So, here are 5 reasons why your Alaska vacation should include a ride on the Alaska Railroad.
Hey! Alaska Residents, a ride on the Alaska Railroad is great for you too! The Railroad is a great way to have a family staycation.
Okay, now read on…
The journey is as great as the destination when you ride the Alaska Railroad!
#1 Gorgeous scenery
All along the road system in Alaska you will see beautiful scenery. From Seward to Fairbanks you will be delighted by all that you see from the roadway. BUT, the Alaska Railroad takes you away from the road system through the untouched wilds of Alaska. You will see even more stunning scenery you can only see by riding the rails.
#2 Everyone gets to enjoy the ride
Being stuffed into a car isn’t the most comfortable ride for anyone. The driver has to pay attention to the road and cannot see all beauty. The passengers are stuck sitting in one seat for hours. A ride on the Alaska Railroad is so much better for everyone. The driver gets to see everything. During the ride, everyone can get up and stretch their legs and visit other train cars along the way. No one is stuck in one seat for the whole trip. How wonderful is that!
#3 A better view
Car windows are quite small. You often have to crane your neck to see all the amazing mountains, wildlife and other scenery as you drive by. Now picture yourself in a train car with giant picture windows all along the sides. Then picture going up into the Vista Dome cars with sweeping panoramic views. You will get to see so much more of the breathtaking scenery you came to Alaska to see when you travel by train rather than a car.
#4 Dining in style
The Alaska Railroad has two different levels of luxury you can choose from as you travel on the train. Adventure Class provides dining and bar service for purchase at the Wilderness Cafe. Some trains even have some dining tables for Adventure Class.
But the true luxury comes with all-inclusive GoldStar Service available on the two major train routes. Instead of eating on your lap as you drive you can enjoy sitting down in the full-service dining car and being served a delicious meal. How luxurious to watch gorgeous scenery pass by as you sit comfortably eating great food and enjoying an adult beverage or two! You can ONLY do this on the Alaska Railroad!
#5 Great for a day trip or a multi-day vacation
The last great reason to ride the Alaska Railroad is you can be so flexible. Your ride on the rails can be just a day excursion, like heading down to Seward for the day, or a long, multi-day complete vacation experience.
One benefit of a vacation package with the Alaska Railroad is that you are only bound by the train schedule. The days that you are visiting the different towns and cities in Alaska are your own. You don’t have to be following the schedule of a tour group. All your activities can be tailored to what you want to do. Then you just make sure you are back to the train when you are scheduled to move on to the next exciting destination. Such great flexibility without having to worry about your transportation from place to place!
How is a ride on the Alaska Railroad great for a multi-family/generational vacation?
Everyone can ride together.
Seats can be easily switched up to let everyone have a chance to sit by everyone.
Kids (well, everyone) can easily get up and stretch their legs.
Comfortable seats all will enjoy. Some even turn so 4 can sit and chat together.
No driving coordination needed. Everyone gets there at the same time.
Once at the destination each family can pick their own activities or everyone can stick together. It’s up to you.

5 Disney World Resort Options for Your Family Reunion or Large Family
If you are planning a large family vacation or family reunion, Walt Disney World Resorts are one of the best locations to vacation in together. However, as with any vacation destination, finding accommodation to fit your whole family in can be tricky. While you can book multiple hotel rooms, sometimes multiple generations want to spend more time together in a shared unit.
Now I’m going to share with you some of my favorite resorts in Walt Disney World that
are ideal for larger families
offer accommodation options for groups of six or more.
offer options for different size families who want to stay near each other
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort – Family Suites
If you are vacationing on a budget, my top choice for larger families would be the Art of Animation Resort’s family suites. Up to six adults can stay in one unit, and it offers a separate master bedroom and two bathrooms in each unit. The family suites offer fun Disney theming based around The Lion King, Cars (my favorite), and Finding Nemo.
Kids of all ages will love the theming in these rooms and appreciate the three large onsite pools. A recent additional benefit to staying at this resort is Disney’s Skyliner transportation system, which will make traveling to Hollywood Studios and Epcot even easier.
Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground – Wilderness Cabins
For a unique vacation, consider staying at the cabins in Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. Comparable to the amenities you’ll find at the other moderate resorts, these cabins can sleep up to six adults and have one queen bed, a set of bunk beds, and a double sleeper sofa in each unit. The kitchen facilities in the cabin can also be helpful for saving money on dining, as these costs can quickly add up for large groups.
You’ll be immersed in the woods of the resort, and the cabins afford more privacy and space than you would get from a typical hotel room. Kids and teens will love the facilities at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, and there’s so much to keep you entertained here without even visiting the theme parks. The Hoop-De-Doo Revue is a terrific dinner show and buffet at Ft. Wilderness, perfect for large family get-togethers.
Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa
If you are looking for the ultimate family vacation accommodation, consider splurging on the three-bedroom Treehouse Villas at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa. They each have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen. But the coolest thing is that they are suspended off the ground in the woods. They are one of the most unique accommodation options on Disney property and so they book up quite quickly due to the limited number of these treehouses.
Alternatively, this resort offers one, two, and three-bedroom units, so there’s plenty of options for different accommodation layouts to fit your family’s needs. One of my favorite things about staying at this resort is its close proximity to Disney Springs, which you can access by boat or even by walking directly from your resort. Put this on the list of possible Disney resorts for your next family reunion!
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort
Split between two different buildings, you’ll get to choose between the original Jambo House or the newer Kidani Village when booking a stay at this resort. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of my all-time favorite Disney resorts, and the theming here is second to none. Kids and adults of all ages will love waking up to the animals on the savannah each morning, and grandparents will enjoy sitting out on the balcony and admiring the incredible views.
Offering villas with one, two, or three bedrooms, as well as standard hotel rooms, there’s an accommodation offering to suit every family’s needs. Don’t miss out on the resort’s fantastic onsite dining. Sanaa at Kidani Village has a bread service that is one of my favorite appetizers at Walt Disney World, and Boma at Jambo House has a buffet that will please the whole family for breakfast or dinner.
Disney’s Riviera Resort
As the newest resort at Walt Disney World, expect modern accommodation offerings at Disney’s Riviera Resort. Elegantly themed after the European Riviera, this resort offers studios, two-bedroom and three-bedroom accommodation options. The studios are ideal for couples in your family who may require a little more privacy but still want to stay nearby the rest of the family.
You’ll enjoy the beautiful grounds and pool that this resort offers, as well as Topolino’s Terrace restaurant, which serves breakfast and dinner daily. This resort benefits from Disney’s Skyliner transportation system and is located within walking distance of Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.
Walt Disney World is one of the best vacation locations for families to gather, and regardless of your party size, there are plenty of accommodation options available to you.

If you are planning a multi-generational family trip, there’s nowhere better in the world to reunite than Walt Disney World. It offers endless entertainment opportunities for children and adults of all ages, as well as fantastic accommodation and dining options. However, a large group trip to Walt Disney World requires some planning to make it a successful and enjoyable trip for all. Today I’m going to share with you my top tips to make your next Disney World family reunion a magical one.
Designate one family member as the main point of contact
In most families, there’s always someone who loves organizing days out and vacations. They are going to be the best bet for taking on the role of organizer for your big family trip. While all the pressure and decision-making shouldn’t be left to one person, it’s much easier to have one person working with your travel agent, looking after your reservations and your bookings. This will save double-bookings and squabbles over the itinerary, and it’s best if they are in charge of your family’s My Disney Experience app and login details. Come together every month or so by video call or in-person to keep up-to-date on any changes to the vacation plans.
Use a Travel Agent
Why handle all the stress and pressure of planning such a big trip by yourself if you don’t have to! The easiest way to offload this stress is to delegate some of this responsibility to a reliable travel agent. By using Alaska to Mickey Vacations, we can handle many of the tasks required for planning a Disney vacation. We’ve visited Disney for countless years, so know the best resorts to stay at and the top restaurants to choose for large groups. With the addition of the requirement of park reservations recently, we’re here to help with any questions or concerns you may have regarding this.
Set your Budget
Discussing money and budgets can be uncomfortable, but it’s best to get this conversation out of the way far in advance of the vacation itself. Everyone travels in a different style, so try to find a compromise as far as resort choices and budgets are concerned. The great thing about Walt Disney World is that there are so many choices for accommodation on-site and in the surrounding area. You’ll easily be able to find the perfect hotel or resort for each family’s budget and accommodation preferences.
Accommodation options for large groups
Once you’ve decided on your budget, it’s time to consider your accommodation options. This is one of the most important parts of planning your family reunion at Disney World. If you are looking to share accommodation with multiple family members, I’d recommend choosing one of the Deluxe Resorts or Deluxe Villa Resorts. These resorts offer more spacious accommodations and have units which feature one, two and three-bedroom options. They are ideal if grandparents are hoping to spend more time with their grandchildren.
For a more budget-friendly option, look at Art of Animation’s family suites, which can comfortably fit up to six people. Another unique option is to stay at Fort Wilderness, where you can enjoy their rustic cabins. You’ll appreciate the extra space to run around as well as the fun recreation options this resort provides. For the ultimate family reunion, consider booking a Treehouse Villa at Saratoga Springs Resort, which sleeps up to nine people.
Dining Reservations
Regardless of how big your travel party is, I’d always recommend booking your Disney dining reservations on the day they open up for booking. This is especially true for large groups, which can be harder to book into some of the most popular restaurants. Make sure you’ve all agreed on a rough itinerary beforehand, so you can try your best to secure all your top restaurant choices. Remember that for large parties, a tip of 18% will automatically be added to your bill.
For large groups, buffets are a great option, as you’ll find something for even the pickiest of eaters and everyone can eat when they are ready. For a great value for money option, I’d recommend Trail’s End at Fort Wilderness Resort, which serves breakfast and dinner daily. You can’t visit Disney without a character meal, especially if you are traveling with younger children, so for the best character interactions, I’d recommend Crystal Palace at the Magic Kingdom or Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary Resort.
Factor in some relaxation time
Group trips can be overwhelming for everyone involved, so it’s important to factor in some downtime to your vacation. Whether that’s time apart as a separate family unit, or an afternoon together at the pool, a few hours away from the parks will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. There’s so much more to Disney than just the theme parks, so enjoy an adult evening at Disney Springs shopping, dining and drinking, or hop around the resorts to enjoy the bars and recreation facilities on offer.
Walt Disney World is the perfect location for a family reunion, and with some advance planning, you’ll create memories that last a lifetime.

How about some other posts you might find interesting…
Right now we are not able to travel, not able to see friends, not able to see family. While we are able to connect with family through online chats it is just not the same as being right there with them. This is a difficult time for so many people due to separation from loved ones, working in stressful environments saving lives, and uncertainty about the future. When we get through all this, and we will, you might want to plan a family vacation to reunite with the ones you love and have been away from. A cruise might be just the vacation you need!
The last couple of cruises we have taken have been with extended family from different parts of the country. Cruises provide an excellent opportunity for families to reconnect and make memories. Read on and discover why a cruise makes a good family reunion vacation!
What makes a Cruise Good for Family Reunions
Accomodations for every family size and budget
One reason a cruise is a good family reunion vacation is that there are many different types of accommodations to fit every budget. Every family in your group has the opportunity to book a room that fits their needs. For budget-conscious family members, less expensive inside cabins are available. For family members who like to be pampered on their vacations, they can choose concierge cabins or suites. Single, double and triple cabins are convenient options for smaller families. Large families might enjoy staterooms that sleep 5 or 6 which are on some ships. Plus there is always the option for each family to spread out a little while still being close in connecting cabins. The possibilities are vast and flexible.
A Good Value
Often cruises provide good value for your money. Everything is included for a wonderful vacation–exceptional accommodations, gourmet dining, and extensive onboard activities. Plus, cruise lines offer promotions at different times for free specialty dining, kids sailing free, or other perks.
Activities for Everyone
Ocean Cruises
Onboard ocean cruises there are activities of many different kinds that will appeal to all ages of your family. Having options for all different family members makes a cruise a good family reunion possibility.
For the kids, most ocean cruises ships have a specific program for them with their own area on the ship. The youth programs are even divided out by ages so teens and pre-teens don’t have to hang out with little kids. Age-appropriate events and activities are planned for each group.
For the adults, there is so much to do I can’t even list it all. Many planned activities during the day include deck parties, games in the sports courts, fitness classes, destination lectures, trivia, meet-ups, introductions to spa experiences, tournaments in the casino, bingo and so much more. In the evening, nightlife varies throughout the bars, lounges, theaters, and casino.
For families, there are scheduled events so families can have fun together. There might be games on the deck or sports courts, craft times, trivia or events in the youth areas. Each cruise line will have fun family activities but I will say that Disney Cruise Line puts a special focus on creating events and activities to bring families together.
River Cruises
River cruise ship activities depend on the cruise line. Some cater to families and therefore have activities for all ages (think Adventures by Disney with AmaWaterways) and some are only for adults (think Viking). But, on a river cruise the emphasis is on the ports and getting out to explore the country. Port excursions are included and on some lines (especially AmaWaterways) there is a nice variety of options that fit different activity levels.
Time together and time apart
Ocean cruise ships offer the opportunity for families to have as much time together and time apart as they wish. This is another benefit that makes a cruise a good family reunion vacation option. Part or all of your family can plan activities together during the day, plan to hang out in the same place, or just expect to see each other in passing throughout the day. You can arrange to eat all your meals together or only one a day as a time for everyone to catch up. In the evening, you can all attend the featured show together and then go your separate ways for the rest of the night. How much togetherness is all up to each family and what fits for them. Even on port days you can plan excursions together each stop, some stops, or separately. There is so much flexibility. This makes a cruise so fantastic for family reunions!
River cruises are similar but a little bit different. Each day is a port day. Every river cruise line differs but most plan a variety of shore excursions each day depending on activity level or interest. This is a fantastic opportunity for family members to have the outing each person (or family) wants and then everyone can reconvene for dinner that evening to share about their adventures.
Effortless Dining
So often it is very difficult to eat all together as a family. A cruise makes it so easy! Your family is assigned to the same tables in the same dining room each night (except Disney Cruise Line which as rotational dining). In the main dining rooms, they have very large tables that can seat 10, 12 or sometimes more. Plus, tables are fairly close together so if you need a few to seat your whole family you still within a nice distance. Another great feature is the diverse menu which can satisfy all members of your family. And, there is no having to deal with splitting up the bill.
Just so you know, eating in the main dining room each night is not required. The main dining room just guarantees a place for your family to be all together. The decision is up to each family.
Convenient Family Communication
If you are out of the country at a resort, communication between families can be difficult and expensive. Depending on your cruise line, ship communication with families aboard can be really easy. Cruise lines have apps that travelers can download and use for free while onboard. Often they have a communication feature that allows you to send messages to other family members. Currently, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity offer this free on select ships. Disney Cruise Line, Holland America and Princess also have this feature at no additional cost. Norwegian and Carnival have a nominal fee to enable the messaging feature to their apps.
Easy planning
Well, planning is easy if you use a travel advisor. Your travel advisor will help you to pick the best cruise for your family based on the cruise line, destinations, promotions and Once you finalize the ship and itinerary, your travel advisor will also help by keeping track of the needs of each family. Often your travel advisor will create a particular group so that everyone can communicate important information before the cruise.
